One night before St. Vincent announced her new album Masseduction, which features piano by Doveman, she showed up at Doveman’s Burgundy Stain Sessions show at NYC’s Le Poisson Rouge (9/5). She wasn’t the only very special surprise guest. Sufjan Stevens showed up too, along with unannounced appearances by Hedwig and the Angry Inch creator John Cameron Mitchell and Justin Vivian Bond. As announced beforehand, Norah Jones, Steve Salett and Joan as Police Woman were there too.

Our photographer Coen Reese was in attendance, and said:

It was Thomas Bartlett’s (Doveman) mother’s birthday, so the entire night was a celebration of her – songs she loves, songs that made him think of her, the song she wants played at her funeral, songs she used to play on a Sunday while doing household chores, etc. They played in the round. Sufjan was on stage very briefly and sang “Happy Birthday” from A Sun Came. St. Vincent performed three songs with Doveman – “Prince Johnny,” “The Bed,” and “Crazy.” Norah Jones performed “Dear Darling,” “After The Fall,” and “How Can You Mend a Broken Heart.” All of the performers (sans Sufjan, St. Vincent and John Cameron Mitchell) came back for the final song – “Chain of Fools” with Doveman’s mother Shery joining them on background vocals.

A photo of the setlest is below and we’ll have more photos of the show coming very soon. UPDATE: Pictures HERE.
