Malian band Songhoy Blues have announced their fourth album, Héritage, which will be out January 17 via Transgressive. The album finds them exploring a more acoustic version of their “desert blues” sound, and features new compositions and their interpretations of Malian classics. They say the album is “a big thank you to the ancestors who bequeathed works of art so that future generations could orient themselves.”
Héritage opens with “Toukambela,” a cover of Orchestre Kanaga de Mopti song that was featured on the 1970 Anthology of Malian Music series. Listen to that, and watch them record it in the studio as part of a documentary short series on Héritage, below.
