It’s been another great year for Short Fictions, the hard-to-define emo, screamo, power pop & more band that released the new album Oblivion Will Own Me and Death Alone Will Love Me (Void Filler) followed by a heavy two-song single this year. With the year coming to a close, band leader Sam Treber has made us a list of his 11 favorite albums of 2023. It ranges from Sunami to The Dare, and Sam included some quips about each one. Read on for the list.

Sam Treber’s Favorite Albums of 2023
I mostly listen to the Beatles and old country but here’s some released from this year that wowed me.
100 Gecs – 10,000 Gecs
I don’t care what anyone has to say about this band, they’re so fun. “Hollywood Baby” was the single and I actually think it’s the weakest song on the album.
Hazing Over – Tunnel Vision
I mostly like the squeelies at the end of the title track. Squee squaw squeee.
Morning Dew – Pulp
The most fully realized release from an incredible group.
Sunami – S/T
Beatdown hardcore bands sound the same to me so I’m just gonna rock with the absolute most ignorant one.
The Dare – The Sex EP
It’s Ed Banger Records revival and it rocks.
Blind Equation – DEATH AWAITS
I don’t really sit down and listen to this album all the way through usually but I saw them live and it really blew me away, and I mean that literally because there was a circle pit that was moving so fast that it created a breeze against my face.
Nicki Minaj – Pink Friday 2
At the time of my writing this, this album is not actually even out yet. I got a good feeling though.
Short Fictions – OWOMaDAWLM
I just think it’s nifty.
Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra (Conducted by Manfred Honeck) – Tchaikovsky Symphony No. 5 & Schulhoff: Five Pieces
It’s kinda weird that a classical album will be just two pieces by different composers on the same disc. I’d never heard of Schulhof but Tchaik’ 5 is a banger and Manfred absolutely cooks.
Kicked in the Head by a Horse – Sporadic Dystrophy
“Petah, the horse is here.”
Thin – Dusk
When the screamo is lofi, I am listening.
