Last fall, Scowl signed to Dead Oceans and released the new single “Special,” and now they’ve announced their anticipated first album for the label. Titled Are We All Angels, it was produced by Will Yip, mixed by Rich Costey, and comes out on April 4. It’s their first full-length since their overtly hardcore punk-oriented 2021 debut LP How Flowers Grow, and it also follows their 2023 EP Psychic Dance Routine, which was split between fast hardcore songs and melodic alt-rock. Even more so than “Special,” new single “Not Hell, Not Heaven” leans into their alt-rock side and pretty much sheds all of its hardcore skin, at least on a musical level. “Hardcore and punk have sculpted how we operate, what we want to do as a band, and how we participate,” says guitarist Malachi Greene. “At our core, we are a punk and a hardcore band, regardless of how the song shifts and changes.”
About the song, vocalist Kat Moss says, “It’s about feeling victimized and being a victim, but not wanting to identify with being a victim. It’s trying to find grace in the fact that I have my power. I live in my reality. You have to deal with whatever you’re dealing with, and it ain’t working for me.” It comes with a video that was directed by Sean Stout and filmed at the legendary DIY venue 924 Gilman, where the members of Scowl originally met. Bassist Bailey Lupo calls the new album Scowl’s “most collaborative to date,” adding, “Everyone brought so many ideas to the table and we were able to dissect it all and take our time. We all have such eclectic tastes, influences and personalities and you can really hear that in every corner on this album.”
Scowl were just announced on this year’s Hinterland festival (alongside Tyler the Creator, Lana Del Rey, Kacey Musgraves, Clairo, and more), and they have an upcoming tour with Movements (who are headlining), Citizen, and Downward. That tour hits NYC’s Brooklyn Paramount on March 14. All dates are listed below.
