Trumpeter and jazz musician Roy Hargrove died Friday night in New York City. He was 49. According to NPR, Roy died from cardiac arrest, and had recently been in the hospital for kidney-related issues, and had been on dialysis for many years. A short statement was posted on Roy’s Facebook page today: “It is with great sadness and a devastated heart that we report the passing of Roy Hargrove on November 2 at the age of 49. Our thoughts and prayers are with his loved ones.”
Coming into prominence in the late-’80s, Roy was one of the premiere trumpet players of the last 30 years, having played with everyone from Herbie Hancock and Wynton Marsalis to Erykah Badu and D’Angelo (including his classic 2000 LP, Voodoo), and more. Rest in peace, Roy.
