R. Kelly cancels tour dates after “abusive cult” allegations

cancelled R Kelly shows

R. Kelly has cancelled at least three upcoming shows in the wake of the disturbing “abusive cult” allegations detailed in a report against him a few weeks ago. Kelly’s scheduled August shows in Baton Rouge, New Orleans, and Dallas are listed as cancelled on Ticketmaster, and TMZ reports that an upcoming Los Angeles show is cancelled as well. These cancellations come after Kelly spoke publicly for the first time following these latest round of accusations, calling them “a bunch of crap” and saying he’d still be playing shows. TMZ further reports that the cancelled shows are due to poor ticket sales, and that a recent Virginia show was only half full.

Allegations of sexual misconduct have been circulating for years, from his marriage to the then-15 year old Aaliyah in 1994, to the infamous “pee tape” in 2002, his indictment on child pornography charges the same year (he was later acquitted), and numerous out of court settlements. Vic Mensa recently gave his opinion of Kelly while speaking with TMZ, saying “Fuck R. Kelly. R. Kelly is a scumbag and a very dirty man and he needs to be locked away forever.” Vince Staples had some choice words for Kelly as well, calling him a “fool” on twitter and arguing with people who replied coming to Kelly’s defense.
