Pronoun (aka Brooklyn musician Alyse Vellturo) has just released a new EP, and it’s been raining ever since. Alyse says, “This entire EP was inspired by subtle feelings for a person that grew overtime until they were unavoidable and unignorable. It is an in real time ode to the process of getting over something that never even happened. It’s about letting go in every way you can imagine to refind yourself for the 15th time.”
The EP finds Pronoun delivering big, propulsive indie pop rock that brings to mind anything from The Killers to the poppier Tegan & Sara albums. “everything looks different”
Like many of my songs, I wrote and recorded this in basically one sitting. I was out with someone I had feelings for and agreed to going to a last minute show thinking they would also be coming. When they left, in the uber ride to the venue, “my energy changes when you’re around” and “everything looks different when you walk away. I rushed home after the gig to put the track down. I immediately knew it would be the opener. I always feel the need to have the happening track of a release be epic, building and pounding, getting larger and larger. It really sets the tone for the rest of the EP.
“i haven’t felt like me”
I wrote this track on my drive home from Massachusetts in late December. A lot of this EP touches on blowing a chance and losing something you never had in the first place. It was everything I wanted to say to someone that I couldn’t at the time.
“together or separately”
This track just chugs, I love the simplicity of it. It’s about infatuation and that weird moment in a crush where you wonder if you will ever be moving through life with that person; together or separately.
“in the still”
i started “in the still” back in the early days of the pandemic. I had an awkward conversation with an acquaintance and never got a chance to apologize before lockdown and seemingly no way to ever resolve it. Years later I found myself in a similar situation and was finally able to finish the rest of the track lyrically.
“i like lizzy (but she doesn’t like me)”
“i like lizzy (but she doesn’t like me)” is about catching feelings for someone after they lost them for you; about being too late to your own party, and the frustration that comes along with all of that.
“who’s to say”
I took a week off work to wrap up my new music, nearly three days in I had not done anything. I had started this little guitar riff but had no idea where to take it. I was feeling like a failure, like I had lost my mojo, and all of a sudden the echoing chorus “who’s to say if I’m right, it’s too late” came into my head and I 180’d into excitement. I wrote the rest of this track on the stoop of my apartment. As the lyrics state…I had locked myself out and it had started to rain. At this point in the mid March it truly felt like it would never stop raining (hence the title of the EP). I started to laugh and tried to make the best out of the frustrating situation, it ended up being one of my favorite tracks on the EP.
