PJ Harvey wrote in a tribute, “Meeting Steve Albini and working with him changed the course of my life.”
Thurston Moore penned a very lengthy tribute to Steve (read it in full), and Thurston’s former Sonic Youth bandmate Lee Ranaldo posted a tribute (included in the list below) as well.
Steve’s Big Black bandmate Santiago Durango (also of Naked Raygun) penned a tribute for Rolling Stone, which reads in part, “I always believed Steve would outlive me. It makes me happy to know Steve lived a full life doing what he wanted to do… What gets overlooked about Steve is that, when everything else is stripped away, he was simply a decent man. Everything makes sense when Steve is viewed through that lens. He was a loyal and lifelong friend because he was a decent man. He was a much better friend than I deserved.” Read the rest here.
Joanna Newsom paid tribute to Steve on stage at Kilby Block Party and you can watch that here.
Dave Grohl dedicated “My Hero” to Steve at the Foo Fighters‘ Charlotte show on Thursday (5/9) and you can watch that here.
Read on for the many, many tributes to Steve…

I'm terribly sad to hear we lost Steve Albini – I met him recently in his studio and he handed out cucumbers from his garden. He was a sharp, honest, funny, and uncompromising man and I'm sorry for his family, friends, and music lovers everywhere.

I don't know what to say about Steve Albini's passing. He had a brilliant mind, was a great artist and underwent the most remarkable and inspiring personal transformation. I can't believe he's gone.

I remember that Zak and I were just giddy to get to record with him. Mim was like “ya whatever” but then they hit it off and got along like old school buddies. They both had the same dry sense of humor and would give each other shit about reverb and tooth brushing.

There’s a very specific lyrical tribute to Steve Albini on CLPPNG that I don’t think anyone has ever noticed. Always hoped I’d get to tell him about it one day. RIP

Love this man’s recording and all of his bands.
Sonically his drum sound was one of a kind.

In shock at Steve Albini's sudden passing. Such a brilliant, infinitely generous person, absolutely one-of-a-kind, and so inspiring to see him change over time and own up to things he outgrew. I'm saddened to learn of the death of Steve Albini. Like so many, I loved his firebreathing Big Black records as a teenager. I met him briefly at Jason Noble's memorial service and found him to be a kind and thoughtful person. My thoughts go out to his friends and family.

Don’t even know what to say about Albini. Wrote some of the most grueling stuff ever recorded (Jordan, Minnesota), disorienting cinema verite recordings that pulled focus from small/dry to huge/cavernous, volleyball hitting a chain link fence guitar burned in my brain since youth

Steve was such a good, caring, and funny guy. I will always treasure the night in ‘99 when he took me to Second City to see a show. I walked into the Electrical kitchen at the agreed upon departure time and he looked at my head, smiled and said, “Your hair is peak Mellencamp.” ❤️
