Pitchfork list their 200 best songs of the 1970s

Back in 2004, Pitchfork published their Top 100 Albums of the 1970s list, and today they’ve returned with the 200 Best Songs of the 1970s. Some of the artists who didn’t make the cut on the albums list are now here, like Black Sabbath, Grateful Dead, Bruce Springsteen, Patti Smith, Van Morrison, Chic, Queen, Elton John, The B-52’s, Blue Oyster Cult, 10cc, The Doobie Brothers, Prince, Bob Marley, Tom Petty, ABBA, The Raincoats, The Slits, X-Ray Spex, The Cure, The Damned, The Undertones, and more.

And of course there are also returning faves like David Bowie (who snagged the #1 spot on both lists), The Rolling Stones, The Who, Led Zeppelin, Fleetwood Mac, Parliament-Funkadelic, Talking Heads, Blondie, Nick Drake, Ramones, Joy Division, Joni MItchell, Bob Dylan, Michael Jackson, Jimi Hendrix, The Sex Pistols, The Clash, Suicide, The Modern Lovers, Iggy Pop, Marvin Gaye, The Beach Boys, The Beatles, Kraftwerk, Can, The Velvet Underground, T Rex, Buzzcocks, Pink Floyd, and plenty more.

There’s early hardcore from Black Flag and The Germs, obscure-ish folk from Karen Dalton and Judee Sill, disco from Rose Royce and Kool & the Gang, early hip hop from Sugarhill Gang, country from Loretta Lynn and Dolly Parton and Waylon Jennings (still no Willie Nelson!), reggae from Lee “Scratch” Perry, Althea & Donna, and Junior Murvin, and still plenty more.
