Pavement capped a nearly three-year-long reunion with the NYC premiere of Alex Ross Perry‘s upcoming PAVEMENTS movie, the documentary/biopic/jukebox-musical that is making the festival rounds now and will be out via MUBI in the spring. With it will be an official soundtrack and that will include the first new Pavement song in 25 years.
Via Stereogum, Pavement’s Spiral Stairs (Scott Kanneberg), Perry and the film’s producer/editor Robert Greene are on the new episode of Vish Khanna‘s Kreative Kontrol podcast this week. When Vish, who is a huge Pavement fan, asked if the reunion has opened up the possibility of new Pavement music, Kanneberg let out a bombshell: “There will be a new Pavement song on the soundtrack, that’s all I’m gonna give you.”
Vish about loses his mind with this news and Perry, who directed the film, adds “Even I didn’t know that!” Kanneberg then says, “I just heard a mix of it today, and it’s pretty good.”
Before you get too excited, Scott says it was recorded during rehearsals, and is not a formal studio recording. “It’s not a big deal. It’s just cool because it’s something different and is a song we all really loved playing.” But still! Stay tuned for more on that.

The last Pavement release was 1999’s Major Leagues EP. Pavement played a show during the New York Film Festival and Bob Nastanovich said it would be their last show “for a very long time.”
