The long-running indie duo Now, Now have just made a surprise return with the 01 EP, their first release since 2018’s Saved, which was their first since 2012’s Threads. (It also follows vocalist KC Dalager’s debut solo album as KC Rae, which came out in 2023.) About the long wait between releases, drummer Brad Hale says, “We aren’t the type of band that can just churn things out for the sake of churning them out. We really have to be in a very specific place to start making new music.”
A press release notes that the songs on this EP have been in the works since the late 2010s, and they were also a result of spending time in their basement studio toying with new gear–“lately some vintage digital reverbs that have been great to incorporate,” says Hale. The songs vary between swelling synth atmospheres, erratic art pop, and atmospheric vocoder. If you’re looking for something that splits the difference between Tegan & Sara and Björk, this might be it.
