So many artists, so many songs, so little time. Here’s a daily roundup with a bunch of interesting, newly released songs in one place.
NEIL FINN – “TIME FOR A CHANGE” (SPLIT ENZ COVER)
NZ rock icons Split Enz’s debut album, Mental Notes, was released 50 years ago today. Neil Finn, who didn’t join his brother Tim in the band till 1977 and went on to found Crowded House, has recorded a cover a song from it to celebrate. “I was absolutely enchanted and inspired by Mental Notes as a 17 year old. It made me believe anything was possible. 50 years later, it sounds as unique and timeless as it did then. Here’s my version of one of my favourite songs on it, written by Philip Judd, Time For A Change.”

MOLLY TUTTLE – “OLD ME, NEW WIG”
Molly Tuttle’s anticipated new album So Long Little Miss Sunshine is out in August, and she’s given us another early taste with “Old Me (New Wig).” “This started off as writing a break-up song,” she says. “We wanted every line to be kind of a zinger. And then we got to the chorus, and it turned into a song about leaving all these things behind that don’t serve you anymore. Parts of yourself that really aren’t in your best interest, like low self-esteem, or not feeling confident. That is another theme of the record that inspired the album title and the cover art. Those are all things I’ve struggled with through the years—just feeling like an impostor, like I wasn’t good enough. And I like singing this song because there are days I’m still telling myself to leave that stuff behind.”

SIR CHLOE – “PASSENGER”
Dana Foote is releasing a new album as Sir Chloe, Swallow The Knife, on August 22 via ONErpm, and she’s shared another preview, the grungy “Passenger.” “I imagined the anguish I experienced while making this record as a passenger who travelled with me,” she says. “It sat on my chest like a rabid chimp, swiping at my face. I sing a lot about longing for relief on this record, because for a long time, I couldn’t get any. You just have to wait it out and be sane and perfect and calm and smiling with your nose ripped off.”
