MJ Lenderman releases his anticipated new album Manning Fireworks this Friday (9/6). Today, he put out its fourth single “Wristwatch,” and it’s my favorite song he’s ever released. Sung from the perspective of an intentionally unlikable male narrator who brags about having a “beach home up in Buffalo and a wristwatch that’s a compass and a cell phone” after being accused of wasting his life away, it finds Lenderman’s mix of humor and poignancy at its most effective, and its melodies haven’t left my brain since the first time I heard the song. It’s a shaggy, rugged, countrified indie rock anthem that would make Lenderman’s heroes in the Drive-By Truckers and Crazy Horse proud, and it’s also just one of the very best songs of the year in any genre. Give the song a listen below.
Lenderman and his live band The Wind have also announced a West Coast tour for early 2025 with Wild Pink (whose new album Dulling The Horns comes out in October), and he also added two new big NYC shows for spring 2025: Brooklyn Steel on April 29 and 30 with This Is Lorelei (whose Box For Buddy, Box For Star is another of this year’s best albums) on night one and Nap Eyes (whose new album The Neon Gate also drops in October) on night two. Tickets for all newly-added dates go on sale Friday (9/6) with presales beforehand.
Lenderman’s previously announced fall tour also includes three Brooklyn shows at Music Hall of Williamsburg in October, all of which are sold out. Updated dates are listed below.
