After announcing that she had a new album on the way, The Land Is Inhospitable and So Are We, over the weekend, Mitski has officially detailed the LP. It’s her seventh album, due out September 15 via Dead Oceans, and she recorded it at East Nashville’s Bomb Shelter and Los Angeles’ Sunset Sound Studios, working with an orchestra arranged and conducted by Drew Erickson, and a full choir of 17 people that she arranged. She also worked with her regular producer Patrick Hyland, and she says, “This is my most American album,” continuing, “The best thing I ever did in my life was to love people. I wish I could leave behind all the love I have, after I die, so that I can shine all this goodness, all this good love that I’ve created onto other people.” See the cover art and tracklist for The Land is Inhospitable and So Are We below.
The first single is “Bug Like an Angel,” which starts out as a spare, guitar and vocals track, far removed from Mitski’s decorated and dancey Laurel Hell material, before exploding into a cinematic chorus which benefits from the full choir she worked with.
