The two big sold-out David Bowie tribute shows at Carnegie Hall and Radio City Music are later this week and both of them will feature, among many others, Michael Stipe. Ahead of those shows, the former R.E.M. frontman stopped by The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon to perform “The Man Who Sold the World.” With only piano accompanyment, it’s a lovely minimal rendition of the song that many people first heard when Nirvana covered it on MTV Unplugged. Tonight’s the rehearsal show at City Winery, which is mainly for Tony Visconti’s Holy Holy, the backing band for the two tribute shows, but special guests are promised. It’s sold out but you can sign up for the waiting list in case tickets become available.
