Melkbelly‘s Miranda Winters has announced her debut solo album as Mandy, Lawn Girl, due April 26 via Exploding In Sound (pre-order). The record was made with Taylor Hales at Steve Albini’s studio in Miranda’s Chicago hometown, Electrical Audio, and her band for the record is Linda Sherman (guitar), Lizz Smith (bass) and Wendy Zeldin (drums).
Miranda cites classic alternative rock bands like Veruca Salt, Sonic Youth, and Liz Phair as core influences, and lead single “High School Boyfriend” puts a fresh spin on that kind of stuff. It’s catchy, fuzzy, and builds to some pretty loud, noisy climaxes. “‘High School Boyfriend’ is a revenge fantasy song about the embarrassment of sincerity and waiting so long to say something that by the time it comes out you’re yelling,” Miranda says. “It’s a ballad for teenage girls everywhere.” It comes with a video directed by Liam Winters, and you can check that out below.
