Atmospheric trio Loma — aka Cross Record’s Emily Cross and Dan Duszynski, and Shearwater’s Jonathan Meiburg — have announced their third album, How Will I Live Without a Body?, which will be out June 28 via Sub Pop. The record was made in studios in England (current home of Cross), Texas (current home of Duszynski), and Germany (current home of Meiburg)
Loma’s last album, 2020’s fantastic Don’t Shy Away, came to exist partially out of encouragement from Brian Eno, and this album has another hero as a guiding force, Laurie Anderson, who gave Cross, Duszynski and Meiburg a chance to work with an AI that had been trained on her work. The submitted to photos to the AI who in turn gave them two poems. “We used fragments of these poems in ‘How It Starts’ and ‘Affinity’,” Meiburg says. “And then Dan noticed that one of AI-Laurie’s lines, ‘How will I live without a body?’ would be a perfect name for the album, since we’d nearly lost sight of each other in the recording process.” The real life Laurie Anderson approved of the album title. “I think she was tickled that her AI doppelganger is running around naming other people’s records,” says Meiburg.
