Veteran husband-and-wife indie pop duo Mates of State have released their first new song in 9 years, “Somewhere.” The announcement reads:
Kori and Jason, who became Mates of State the moment they met, have been partners in life and music since 1997. It’s been over 25 years, and their immense bond is more evident than ever. Coming off a summer 17-date, no-days-off(!) tour, where their daughters were their crew, they now return with their first release in 9 years, a song, “Somewhere.”
“Somewhere” explores a couples past individual relationships. Can you set aside lost love, resentment, and even trauma, to try and understand that all those things from the past created the person that you now love? To whatever degree, those previous loves will always live somewhere within you. And that’s ok and maybe even good. Humans are WIP’s.
It’s a catchy, sentimental song that finds the duo in great form, and you can hear it and watch the video (created by J Hammel and Mates of State) below. Mates of State last released the You’re Going To Make It EP and the best-of comp Greats on Barsuk/Fierce Panda in 2015. They also contributed an of Montreal cover to Polyvinyl’s 2016 covers comp Polyvinyl Plays Polyvinyl.
