Australian instrumental trio Dirty Three are back with Love changes everything, their first album in 12 years. The band are far-flung around the world these days — drummer Jim White in Brooklyn, violinist Warren Ellis is in Paris, with only guitarist Mick Turner still living in Melbourne — and they are not a group that works remotely. It took a while to get them back into a room together. Finally reuinited, they made it at Melbourne’s Headgap Studios with engineer Nick Huggins behind the boards. It was recorded in five days but they spent a year mixing it.
The album consists of “Love changes everything” in six parts, with the trio’s raw live-in-studio recordings having been “untethered from its streams of consciousness and reconsidered as a recording; brought to bear through edits, overdubs and mixes, resequenced and made suite-like. Made into this album.”
“We couldn’t have made this record 30 years ago,” Ellis told NPR. “It was just a trust in getting in the room and playing and seeing what would happen.”
