LA shoegaze/noise rock trio julie follow up a string of EPs and singles with the announcement of their debut album, my anti-aircraft friend, due September 13 via Atlantic (pre-order). The album opens up with the band’s Sonic Youth-y 2023 single “catalogue,” and it also features new single “clairbourne practice,” one of the band’s biggest, loudest, and best songs yet. It’s a revved-up shoegazer à la “You Made Me Realise,” and it uses familiar tricks in a fresh, modern way.
“It’s two voices conflicting and crashing with each other, unable to understand each other,” the band says. “The way the vocals are layered on top of each other in this song is maybe the most androgynous on the album. But it’s two people saying the same thing and still not hearing each other. We definitely wanted the loud and quiet parts to be polar opposites. Sweet, then destructive, and coming back and repeating the cycle.” It comes with a video that the band co-directed with Lizzie Klien, and you can check that out below.
julie also have upcoming tour dates with Alex G, Faye Webster, Hello Mary, and Dutch Interior (separately), and those are listed below.
