Jay Som (aka Melina Duterte) recently shared “The Bus Song” off her upcoming debut album for Polyvinyl, Everybody Works, and now she’s got another song out from it. This one’s called “1 Billion Dogs,” and it’s covered in a haze of distortion, unlike the much clearer, sorta Rilo Kiley-ish lead single. (She does cite My Bloody Valentine, Yo La Tengo, and The Microphones as influences.) It’s proof that she’s not a one-trick pony, and it’s keeping the hopes high for this record. Texturing her songs with keys, trumpet, and even accordion, Duterte collages her interests: vivid guitar rock, spectral 4AD dreamscapes, orchestral confessionals. Most beguilingly, the album is anchored by a wondrous pair of slinky funk jams, “One More Time, Please” and “BayBee.” “All of my songs are so different, but you know it’s me,” she says. “I just don’t like staying in one place at all.”
