Jack White‘s tour hit Edmonton, Alberta’s Rogers Place on Friday (11/2) and there was an incident at the show where concert attendee Allyson MacIvor, who plays in the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra, kissed the woman she was with, caught up in the moment while Jack White played “Seven Nation Army.” An usher came over and, according to MacIvor, put a hand between them, saying, “this is not allowed here.” The usher escorted them to talk to a manager, who, MacIvor says, “apologized profusely” and told the usher to return to their post.
MacIvor, who had not come out publicly prior to this, posted about the incident on Facebook which got picked up by the media. Jack White heard about it, and posted a statement Tuesday night on Instagram:
This photo is a lesbian couple sharing a kiss at a Beatles concert in 1964 while the rest of the crowd screamed for the band. This is one of my favorite photos because of how beautiful the situation is; they are hiding in plain sight. Its 2018 now and two people expressing affection shouldn’t have to hide. The news that two women were stopped from kissing during my show in Edmonton really disappointed me. At the next show in Calgary I dedicated the song “love interruption” to the two women and encouraged everyone in the crowd to kiss their loved ones. Let’s promote love and acceptance wherever and whenever we can. -Jack White III
