INDIGO DE SOUZA – PRECIPICE REVIEW
After three albums of indie rock and bedroom pop, Indigo De Souza took a stylistic swerve in 2024 with a surprise hyperpop-inspired EP, WHOLESOME EVIL FANTASY, and it helped set the tone for her fourth full length, Precipice, which is one of her most varied releases yet. Her vulnerable lyricism gets a jolt from an urgent beat and bright synths on “Crying Over Nothing,” a bop even as it recounts “heartbreak that feels beyond reason.” It’s a highlight, as is the widescreen, frenetic rock of “Heartthrob.” She also slows things down on “Dinner,” a moody, atmospheric track where electronics swirl around mournful piano and sincere lyrics, and “Heartbreaker” isn’t too far removed from some of her earlier indie rock, but with bigger production. Indigo said that she “wanted to make music that could fill your heart with euphoria while you dance along” on Precipice, and she made an album that makes you want to move without ceding any emotional potency.
