Green Day already gave their world-conquering 1994 album Dookie a 30th anniversary box set and they’ve been playing it in full on tour (alongside a full performance of American Idiot, which is getting a 20th anniversary box set later this month), and now they’re teaming up with LA’s “very serious art studio” BRAIN to release DOOKIE DEMASTERED, which presents the 15 songs from Dookie in limited, intentionally-inconvenient, low-quality formats, like a player piano roll, a floppy disk, a doorbell, a Game Boy cartridge, an electric toothbrush, a Big Mouth Billy Bass, a HitClip, an answering machine, a music box, and more. The announcement reads:
Instead of smoothing out its edges and tweaking its dynamic ranges, this version of Dookie has been meticulously mangled to fit on formats with uncompromisingly low fidelity, from wax cylinders to answering machines to toothbrushes. The listening experience is unparalleled, sacrificing not only sonic quality, but also convenience, and occasionally entire verses. It’s Dookie, the way it was never meant to be heard.
