Green Day have been busy this week making themselves very visible in the lead up to their new album release, having played a surprise set in a subway station, appeared on The Howard Stern Show, and now played a very intimate set at NYC’s Irving Plaza on the eve of Saviors‘ release.
We were told Green Day would take the stage around 8pm, and that is pretty much exactly what happened, but first there were a few intros from SiriusXM who presented the show and recorded it. You’ll be able to hear the whole thing on the new Green Day Radio station this weekend. The show was also sponsored by Carnival Cruise Line who were thanked on stage and given credit for the free poster that every attendee got while walking out. Somebody was also awarded a poster in a frame, and much of the crowd was awarded their tickets to be there via promotions SiriusXM was running.
Opening super strong with “American Idiot,” the lucky club crowd at Manhattan’s 1100-capacity Irving Plaza — where Green Day have now played four times since 1994 — was instantly sent into a frenzy, especially the pocket of super fans near the front who continued to sing every word — even the deep cuts — during the 26-song, hits-filled set. In all we got 7 songs from the 20-year old hit album with the same name including “Boulevard of Broken Dreams” which got one of the biggest crowd reactions of the night. There were also six new songs, and a lot of ’90s classics (four from Dookie, four from Kerplunk, and two from Insomniac, plus two from 2000’s Warning). You can see the entire setlist below.
The whole band — who are a tight six piece live — looked like they were having a lot of fun, and clearly appreciated being there despite their ability to headline stadiums (like they’ll do at…… next time they’re in town.) It was during Dookie favorite “Longview” that Billie Joe paused to kindly encourage the crowd to put their phones away, a sentiment that the SiriusXM rep who introduced the band also made. “Bobby Sox” is a clear highlight from the new album and was of the show too. It already feels like a new live staple. Billie Joe continues to command the stage and sing the fast songs like a pro while Mike Dirnt and Tré Cool also make playing two hours of music seem effortless. Live members Jason Freese (various instruments) and Kevin Preston (guitar) were both celebrating birthdays, and Billie Joe led the crowd in singing to both of them. The whole thing zipped by, and around 10pm the band finished without an encore and we all headed back out into the frigid winter that NYC is experiencing this week.
