Gary “Mani” Mounfield, bassist in Stone Roses / Primal Scream, dies at 63: Liam Gallagher, Bobbie Gillespie, Ian Brown, New Order, Tim Burgess & more pay tribute

Gary “Mani” Mounfield, who played bass in The Stone Roses and Primal Scream, has died at 63. His brother Greg shared the sad news, writing, “It is with the heaviest of hearts that I have to announce the sad passing of my brother.” No cause of death has been announced.

Mani has been beloved member of the British indie scene for 40 years — and entirely essential to both The Stone Roses and Primal Scream’s sound — and tributes have been pouring in. Stone Roses frontman Ian Brown wrote, “REST IN PEACE MANi X.”

Primal Scream’s Bobby Gillespie wrote, “Mani … Knighted by the terraces. Loved by everyone who ever knew or met him. He lit up our lives and funked up our sound. A true punk and working class hero. His light shines on.”

Tim Burgess of The Charlatans paid tribute, writing, “One of the absolute best in every way – such a beautiful friend.”

The Beta Band’s Steve Mason wrote a lovely tribute, saying in part, “An entire generations cooler older brother is gone. Mr.Manchester, the high ambassador, is gone. Mani is gone. Except of course he isn’t. And never will be gone. You don’t leave a footprint that big and disappear. In musical terms that mark lives forever. In personal terms anyone who has been alive over the last week can see his effect on the people he met.”

Shaun Ryder of Happy Mondays: “RIP Mani – my heartfelt condolences to his twin boys and all of his family.”

Liam Gallagher wrote, “IN TOTAL SHOCK AND ABSOLUTELY DEVASTATED ON HEARING THE NEWS ABOUT MANI MY HERO RIP RKID LG.”

Echo & The Bunnymen‘s Ian McCulloch wrote, “I’m absolutely gutted to hear the news about Mani, who I have always loved and always will love, deeply and forever. Like a brother. I am in shock to be honest. Please tell me I’m just having a bad, bad dream. My thoughts and feelings and Manilove to all of his family from me.”

Rowetta, who sang with Happy Mondays, wrote, “Going to miss you so much 💔💔💔 All my love to the boys, the family & all those who knew & loved him ❤️ 🕊️ .”
