Hyperpop sibling duo Frost Children released two albums this year, SPEED RUN in April followed by Hearth Room in November; stream both below. As 2023 draws to a close, we’ve been asking artists about their favorite music of the year, and Angel and Lulu Prost each made us lists of albums and songs. ANGEL’S PICKS:
Mother Cell – The Cycle
NYC legends. This album is a masterwork of club-ready industrial thrashening with digital-stained cunty vocals. You feel invaded and turned on the whole time. Check out “Preach Bitch” and “Test”.
Joeyy – “Coat I Would Buy”
This is one of the sweetest and warmest songs for me this year. Makes me smile and feel swaggy in my skin. I feel like a cartoon character walking and whistling a pleasant melody when I listen to this.
Bamster – “Push My*” ft. iKeda
Fantastic club offering from the most notable London collective at the moment, PhatBoy records. If I found this song when I was 14 it would have dramatically shifted the arc of my life. Addicting perfect pop song (iKeda has epic style IRL too).
NewJeans – Get Up
“ASAP” from this EP (their 2nd, if you were unsure) is a blueprint for the future of K-pop: chords barely chime in, drums are crystallized into their bare essentials. The rest of the EP follows this blueprint, and the result is a quick hit of dopamine that leaves you feeling wrapped in a wave of pleasant exhales.
Babymorocco – The Sound
Pure beach party bliss. So easy to listen to a million times. It reminds me of when we dated… I forgive him and I will publicly admit I love this album.
LULU’S PICKS:
Danny Brown – Quaranta
Front to back such an intimate and pleasing album, I feel blessed to hear him feel so vulnerable to share true reflection about age and doubts, also the drums on track 6 are so cool I’m gonna drum to it when I get back to NYC.
George Clanton – Ooh Rap I Ya
All I can say is we heard this album live every night for 2 months, never got old. Structure and production are his best yet. Shouts out.
death’s dynamic shroud – Transcendence Bot / Midnight Tangerine / Keys to the Gate
One of the most dedicated acts I can think of right now. 3 albums, each dedicated and created by one of the 3 members, and it’s well worth the time.
Skrillex – Quest for Fire / Don’t Get Too Close
Although I don’t listen to this as much as I did when it first came out, it still soundtracked most of early spring for me. We also definitely have a couple of them in our flash drives when we DJ, always gets a party started
Haru Nemuri – INSAINT
Drums on this are so well performed and mixed, same with the guitars. I always feel so excited when this comes on, her vocals are so raw and the screams are electric.
