Fontaines D.C.‘s highly anticipated fourth album, ROMANCE, comes out later this month, and they’ve shared a third advance single, “Here’s The Thing.” Vocalist Grian Chatten calls it “an anxious tune that twists and turns in what it wants, back and forth between pain and numbness.”
The video for “Here’s the Thing” was directed by Luna Carmoon, who just made her feature film debut in May with the queasy, acclaimed drama, Hoard. Here, she takes cues from a variety of high school horror films — The Craft, Ginger Snaps, Carrie and Phenomena come to mind. Set against a traditional Irish dance competition, it’s more a horror short, where the song is the soundtrack, rather than a traditional music video. It’s very well done, more than a little freaky, and the song’s great too. Watch it below.
The band’s Conor “Deego” Deegan III also spoke to Zane Lowe on Apple Music 1 about the new single, saying, “I think it was a really special song to make. In some way, I think we just kind of had a moment where we’re kind of fighting with each other. Weirdly for us, we kind of reconciled and let it all out at once. That’s the tune. That’s what it’s about, really.”
Fontaines D.C. begin their tour later this month, including a North American leg that starts in September. They’ll be in NYC for shows at Brooklyn Paramount on October 15 and 16, and you can see all dates below.
