Fleshwater, Panchiko, Jeff Rosenstock, Little Simz & more music you may have missed over the holidays

BrooklynVegan wrapped up 2024 with our many year-end lists, and we took a little time off around the holidays so we didn’t get a chance to post all the music released between Christmas time and today. To catch up, here’s a roundup of all the music that caught our ear during that timeframe…

JEFF ROSENSTOCK – “THE SUNRISE SONG”

Jeff Rosenstock contributed a scrappy solo song to California art collective Making New Enemies’ new compilation Group Picture Vol. 14.

PANDA BEAR – “FERRY LADY”

Panda Bear’s new album Sinister Grift is out February 18 and here’s a second single from it. “Ferry Lady” is, as is most Panda Bear songs, steeped in ’60s pop but with a sound all his own. The video is pretty trippy, too.

FRANZ FERDINAND – “HOOKED”

Franz Ferdinand’s new album, The Human Fear, is out this Friday and here’s one last early taste before the whole thing drops. “Hooked” comes with an electroclash synth hook and slinky vibe. “Sliding into midnight, it’s a nighttime prowl of a song,” says Alex Kapranos. “If we all have the human fear, then that’s alright when you’re hooked. I thought I knew what love was… but then I met you.”

THE WEATHER STATION – “BODY MOVES”

“This song was the hardest song, we recorded it, changed everything, recorded it again, changed everything, recorded it again,” says Tamara Lindeman of “Body Moves” from the Weather Station’s upcoming Humanhood (out January 17). “It had to be tender and bruised and painful; like falling into a dream but also into reality. This was yet another song I rejected when I wrote it because I wasn’t sure how to stand behind it. But then again, the song was simply presenting something that is real and that happens; the body fools you, the body moves you, sometimes in directions seemingly self destructive or painful or visceral. Bodies are biological and so is their language; chemical, pain, impulse, shut down, wake up. What matters is the interpretation, the response, whether or not you’re able to hear the signal at all.”

GUIDED BY VOICES – “DAWN BELIEVES”

Guided by Voices’ 41st album Universe Room is out in just a couple weeks and “Dawn Believes” is the latest single. It’s pretty laid back and guitarist Doug Gillard explains how this one is a little different in execution: “This song was assigned to me to record all the music for, and 3 others on this album went to the other members.”

I’ll share the demo eventually. We recorded this version in LA with the best band and engineer. I cried when I heard the final mix. I was walking along the beach in California but got so hyped I had to run. Sad songs do that to me. (warning: Meg [Duffy]’s solos are so heartbreaking it’s unbearable.) Whatever kind of holiday season you’re having, I hope this brings you some comfort. The song is meant to be hopeful.
