The Tom Petty covers keep pouring in, following the sad news of the rock legend’s death. We’ve heard from Coldplay & R.E.M.’s Peter Buck, Nada Surf’s Matthew Caws, and The National, and now frequent National collaborator Doveman (aka Thomas Bartlett) has released a hushed, atmospheric cover of “Learning to Fly” from the Heartbreakers’ 1991 LP Into the Great Wide Open. Doveman really makes it his own while also doing justice to the original. Listen below.
Doveman has been busy lately. He made a surprise appearance at The National’s Bowery Ballroom show just days after playing his own NYC show that boasted surprise appearances from St. Vincent and Sufjan Stevens. He contributed extensively to St. Vincent’s new album, which comes out next week.
