A DJ died and others were injured during a stage collapse at the Atmosphere dance music festival in Esteio, Brazil on Sunday (12/17). Kalleby Freitas da Rosa (DJ Kaleb Freitas) was performing onstage when heavy winds and storm conditions caused the scaffolding and overhead structure to break apart and fall. (Frightening video of the collapse is below.) Da Rosa suffered severe head injuries and was immediately rushed to the hospital where he was pronounced dead. Others are reported to be treated for injuries, although there are conflicting reports on the exact number of festival attendees who were affected. Fans have taken to DJ Kaleb Freitas’ Facebook page to pay respects.
Atmosphere Festival posted an official statement on their Facebook page, saying they have “lost a friend, [and] an artist.” You can read the full, translated statement below:
We always cherish for the safety of our public, following all the processes, reports and authorizations requested by the local authorities.
And our public will keep them informed of all our actions to keep the truth about the events occurred.
Anyway, we are desolate, we lost a friend, an artist. Our priority is to assist the wounded and their families.
We thank the Military Brigade and the Fire Brigade for the entire assistance.
According to TheJournal.ie, an investigation has been launched into the festival, which went ahead despite forecasts warning of severe weather, including strong winds, torrential rain, and hail.
