Copenhagen instrumental rockers Town Portal are following 2013’s Chronopoly this year with a new album, The Occident, on May 25 via Small Pond Recordings (pre-order). Earlier this month they released the first single “Bonus Trigger,” and today we’re premiering new single “Yes Golem.” On Facebook, the band list their genre as “No,” which, in addition to being kinda funny, is pretty accurate. The band go for thick-toned Pelican-like riffs, but they’re not exactly metal. They’ve got some tricky time signatures in there, but it’s not chaotic enough to be math rock. And despite the urge to call a vocal-less rock band “post-rock,” nothing about their music really warrants that either. That said, it’s not crazy out-there stuff or anything. These are tight, cohesive songs, and they have the ability to be accessible even to someone who doesn’t normally listen to instrumental bands.
