Clothing, the duo project of Aakaash Israni of Dawn of Midi and Ben Sterling of Mobius Band/Cookies, have announced their debut album, From Memory, which will be out July 26 via Water Level. They’ve been working on and off over the last decade on these songs, with the long gestation period due in part from trying to find the right vocal collaborators. “We learned that it’s incredibly hard to imagine a voice singing a song that it hasn’t sung yet,” says Sterling. From Memory features contributions from Amber Coffman (Dirty Projectors), L’Rain, Anna Wise (Kendrick Lamar’s “These Walls”) and Elliott Skinner (Thirdstory).
The album includes previously released songs “Kingdom” (ft Coffman) and “Modern Interiors” (ft Wise) and the new single is “Still Point” ft L’Rain. “After we heard L’Rain’s beautiful performance, we went back and rearranged the chorus to give her voice even more space,” says Israni. “That’s how we ended up with such a bare, almost solemn first chorus compared to the more ecstatic second. She chose this song right away and brought so much pathos to her performance. Her wordless outro vocal is sublime.”
