Today is Bandcamp Friday, and for it, Cindy Lee has a treat for us: all of their albums are now available to stream there, download digitally, and preorder on vinyl. All their albums are also getting new vinyl reissues on October 31 via Superior Viaduct imprint W.25TH, including the first proper release of 2020 album Cat O’ Nine Tails.
Cat O’Nine Tails was Cindy Lee’s second album of 2020, coming just a couple months after What’s Tonight to Eternity? and was only available as a lathe-cut LP (only 50 made) and as a purchased digital download through their website. Here’s my Indie Basement review from the time:
Where What’s Tomorrow to Today? was equal parts harrowing and engrossing, Cat O’Nine Tails is “lighter” in comparison — no massive shards of feedback thrown into the middle of songs — and mostly instrumental, including a number of tracks that Flegel rightly calls “hardcore neo-classical material,” albeit made with synths. The “proper” songs are all in that gauzy early-’60s highschool slow dance style Flegel does very well, especially on “Love Remains” which plays like a duet between different aspects of Flegel’s self. As always, Flegel creates a totally immersive world where the line between dreams, nightmares and reality are obscured by a slowly spinning mirrorball.
Also being reissued are 2018’s Model Express, and 2015’s Act of Tenderness and Malenkost. You can stream those and Cat O’Nine Tails below.
With this, all of Cindy Lee’s music has also been taken off Spotify and all other streaming services at the artists’ request, according to a press release, not that a lot of it had been available there before.
