CHRISTEENE paid tribute to Sinéad O’Connor with Peaches & Justin Vivia

Following a free show in Los Angeles over the weekend, CHRISTEENE paid tribute to the late Sinéad O’Connor with full-album performances of The Lion and the Cobra at City Winery in NYC this week. We caught Monday night’s (3/25) show, which saw the venue transformed, with the center section that would normally be filled with tables and chairs removed to accomodate a GA standing section, which suited CHRISTEENE’s often hilarious act well.

The setlist consisted of creative covers of the album’s songs in order, with Peaches joining CHRISTEENE on “Troy,” and Justin Vivian Bond on “Drink Before the War” (but not on “Jerusalem,” as printed on the setlist).

For the encore, CHRISTEENE said that she loved singing Sinéad’s songs, and joked that if people thought she was going to be in a room as big as City Winery and not sing one of her own songs, then they were stupid. She then finished the show with her signature song, “Fix My Dick.” A killer show all around.

In their review, New York Times wrote:

In celebrating “a very powerful woman,” Christeene said onstage, “I think we need to understand the dangers of religion, and the importance of ritual.” She arrived in a scuffed-up red robe, flanked by two dancers in white papal hats, and then shed it all to reveal a triangle of fabric across her nether region; costume changes brought a series of sheer, one-shouldered unitards — Skims from another dimension.
Traversing a stage decorated with crinkled sheets and cones of aluminum foil, in high-heeled black boots, she had the energetic strut of Iggy Pop and the evocative, funny monologues — about faith, protest and community — of an oracle. From the very first song, the audience was intensely rapt.

Pastel portraits of Sinéad O’Connor that CHRISTEENE drew were for sale at the merch table, with proceeds going to medical aid for Palestinians.
