Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band kicked off their “No Kings” Land of Hope and Dreams tour — which has Tom Morello playing with them on every date — on Tuesday night in Minneapolis at the Target Center.
The location of the first stop was obviously very intentional, and followed Bruce’s performance of “Streets of Minneapolis” at Saturday’s No Kings protest in the city. “This past winter, federal troops brought death and terror to the streets of Minneapolis,” Springsteen told the crowd. “Well, they picked the wrong town. The power, the solidarity of the people of Minneapolis, of Minnesota, was an inspiration to the entire country. Your strength and your commitment told us this is still America. And this will not stand.”
The setlist was very intentional as well, opening with a cover of The Temptations/Edwin Starr’s protest classic “War,” which they hadn’t played in over two decades, followed by “Born in the U.S.A.,” “Death to My Hometown,” “No Surrender” and “Darkness on the Edge of Town.” Springsteen later said, “Tonight we ask all of you to join with us in choosing hope over fear, democracy over authoritarianism, the rule of law over lawlessness, ethics over unbridled corruption, resistance over complacency, unity over division and peace over war.”
The set also included the first full band performance of “Streets of Minneapolis,” as well as “Murder Incorporated,” “American Skin (41 Shots),” “The Rising,” “The Ghost of Tom Joad,” and more with the main set ending with “Badlands” and “Land of Hope and Dreams.”
They came back for a six-song encore that included “Born to Run,” “Bobby Jean,” and “Dancing in the Dark,” with Tom Morello coming out to close three-hour show with “Tenth Avenue Freeze-Out” and covers of songs by two Minnesotans: Prince’s “Purple Rain” (first time in 10 years) and Bob Dylan’s “Chimes of Freedom.”
Before that last song, Bruce told the crowd, “Now I go back to thinking about Renee Good’s last words before she died. To the man who she was protesting against, the man who would take her life, she said, ‘That’s fine dude, I’m not mad at you.’ I’m not mad. God bless her.”
