These days just about everybody is getting the band back together, so much so that there are very few that when we see them, “never thought that would ever happen” pops into our heads. One holdout has been DC icons Fugazi who last played live on November 4, 2002 and went on “indefinite hiatus” in 2003. They have never broken up, though, and remain friends. As far back as 2011, guitarist Ian MacKaye said the band have been offered “insane amounts of money to play reunions, but it’s not going to be money that brings us back together, we would only play music together if we wanted to play music together and time allowed it.”
The four members of Fugazi do still hang out when they’re all in DC, which includes playing together. One member who wishes that would upgrade to actually playing in front of audiences again is drummer Brendan Canty. In a new documentary short titled “A Day in DC with Fugazi Drummer Brendan Canty” that was posted on YouTube earlier this month, Brendan talks about the the possibility of an actual reunion. “There’s always a lingering chance of us getting back together,” he says. “It becomes less and less likely, but there were times throughout the last 22 years that we have gotten together and played for sometimes a week at a time.”
“We always see each other in town, and we’re always working on other reissue projects,” Canty continues. “I mean, we’re just in each other’s lives a lot so, you know, it’s not up to me whether we get the band back together. If it was up to me, we’d be out there playing, but it’s not that easy.”
