Asheville musicians Wednesday, Indigo de Souza & more respond to Hurricane Helene damage

Musicians from in and around Asheville, North Carolina have responded as their hometown suffers from the devastating Hurricane Helene. As the Associated Press reports, the death toll is nearly at 100:

A crisis unfolded in Asheville as officials pledged to get more water, food and other supplies to flood-stricken areas without power and cellular service Monday, days after Hurricane Helene ripped across the U.S. Southeast. The death toll from the storm approached 100.

At least 91 people across several states were killed. A North Carolina county that includes the mountain city of Asheville reported 30 people killed.

Gov. Roy Cooper predicted the toll would rise as rescuers and other emergency workers reached areas isolated by collapsed roads, failing infrastructure and widespread flooding.

Supplies were being airlifted to the region around the isolated city of Asheville. Buncombe County Manager Avril Pinder pledged that she would have food and water to the city by Monday.

“We hear you. We need food and we need water,” Pinder said on a Sunday call with reporters. “My staff has been making every request possible to the state for support and we’ve been working with every single organization that has reached out. What I promise you is that we are very close.”

Wednesday‘s Karly Hartzman posted that she flew to Asheville from New York on Thursday and was stuck there for a few days. She also mentioned that MJ Lenderman is safe at his house with plans to evacuate, though Lenderman hasn’t publicly commented on his own, and she shared a list of places to get gas, food, water, wi-fi, and more and is encouraging others to repost:

Indigo de Souza performed at All Things Go in NYC yesterday (9/29) and said on stage that her house is underwater. She also posted to her Instagram stories and said that she’s stocking up on resources and currently taking donations via Venmo (@indigofaraway)–she says any money not used will be donated.

“I an completely devastated right now,” she wrote. “My home is under water, my community is without basic survival resources, people are losing their homes and lives, many spaces I’ve known my whole life are destroyed. We will be rebuilding from the ground up and we will need so much support and love. I am feeling so out of control being on tour and unable to reach anyone… North Carolina, you are so special to me. I will stand by you always.”

Update: Indigo has also cancelled some events and she shared pictures of the damages to her home.

Asheville emo band Kerosene Heights posted multiple relief efforts to their Instagram stories and wrote, “The situation in Asheville is rough and everybody’s feeling it right now. We are luckily all currently safe but unsure of what the coming weeks and months are going to look like.”

Asheville music venue The Orange Peel posted the following update, and thankfully they say the building was “spared any significant damage.”

Needless to say, but most shows in Asheville aren’t happening this week, including Mannequin Pussy and Knocked Loose.

Asheville is also home to the Moog Synthesizer Factory and Moog Museum. No word yet on what kind of damage they have incurred.

Hurricane Helene also hit Florida and other parts of the Southeast, and Cannibal Corpse guitarist Erik Rutan (who’s also played in Morbid Angel and fronts Hate Eternal) left the tour due to “catastrophic damage” to his St. Petersburg, Florida home. “Our hearts go out to Erik and his wife as they deal with this situation,” the band wrote.
