Clive Langer is best known as a producer who, with his parter Alan Winstanley, were one of the most successful, sought-after production teams of the ’80s and ’90s. They twiddled knobs for Elvis Costello (Punch the Clock), Dexy’s Midnight Runners (Too-Rye-Aye), and basically everything Madness ever did, as well as records by Morrissey, The Teardrop Explodes, Primal Scream, China Crisis, Blur and more. But he’s also a musician, having played guitar for revered Liverpool cult band Deaf School in the mid-to-late ’70s.
Upon turning 60, Langer decided to get back into playing music and formed The Clang Group, getting help from Roxy Music’s Andy Mackay, Madness singer Suggs, and others. If you dig some of the classic records Langer worked on, chances are you’ll like the organ-driven sound of The Clang Group, who would’ve fit in nicely alongside Costello or Madness in 1979. Their debut album, Practice, will be out September 30 via Domino. You can check out the video for first single “Acre Lane,” and check out the LP’s artwork and tracklist, below.
