So many artists, so many songs, so little time. Each week we review a handful of new albums (of all genres), round up even more new music that we’d call “indie,” and talk about what metal is coming out. We post music news, track premieres, and more all day. We update a playlist weekly of some of our current favorite tracks. Here’s a daily roundup with a bunch of interesting, newly released songs in one place.
SKY FERREIRA – “LEASH”
Sky Ferreira’s first new music in two years isn’t from her long-awaited new album Masochism, but from new A24 film Babygirl, which stars Nicole Kidman. “That character is very self-destructive and destructive with other people’s lives, but she kinda has to go through this whole experience for the sake of growing as a person,” Sky says. “I think that’s why I connected to the material so much, even though my circumstances are so different from the world of the film.”

IGGY POP – “THE PASSENGER” (LIVE AT MONTREUX JAZZ FESTIVAL 2023)
Iggy Pop is a lifer who never slows down, so it should come as no surprise that a live recording and pro-shot video of Iggy, his band, and a horn section performing “The Passenger” at Montreux Jazz Festival 2023 is just as inspired as footage of Iggy performing the song back in the 1970s. The audo is off his upcoming live album Live at Montreux Jazz Festival 2023, due January 24. “Stravinski Hall [where this set took place] is special, like Carnegie or the Garden or Sydney Opera,” Iggy says. “I’ve dived in them all.”

Rebecca Black’s new album Salvation is due out on January 17, and she’s shared another track from it. “‘Sugar Water Cyanide’ is like if my drug of choice were a person,” she says. “This is one of those songs that feels as though it’s been inside of me my whole life and was waiting for the right day and time to be ready for it to pour out. I wanted to make THAT song you could only really hear on 100% volume in your car or busting through the bass in the club.”

THALA – “DRIVE SONG”
German dreampop artist Thala has announced new album, Avalanche, which will be out February 14 via Fire. She says first single “Drive Song” is about “a character falls in love with someone without even knowing who they are, kind of ‘blinded by the pretty shiny light’ one could say,” adding that they “then fall into a deep hole of depression as their toxic energy sucks all the good away and makes them question their life choices whilst still missing that relationship.”

SON LUX – “DON’T SAY IT’S TOO LATE”

VENTURING (JANE REMOVER) – “FAMOUS GIRL”
The story of the obscure ’90s shoegaze, slowcore, or emo band that goes viral decades later and launches a comeback is becoming an increasingly common phenomenon (shoutout Duster, Panchiko, and of course the OGs American Football), and, apparently, Jane Remover has a fictional “band” called Venturing whose (again, fictional) story is exactly that. Venturing’s debut album comes out in February, and new single “Famous Girl” is out now. Read more here.
