6 New Songs Out Today

So many artists, so many songs, so little time. Each week we review a handful of new albums (of all genres), round up even more new music that we’d call “indie,” and talk about what metal is coming out. We post music news, track premieres, and more all day. We update a playlist weekly of some of our current favorite tracks. Here’s a daily roundup with a bunch of interesting, newly released songs in one place.

PAYCHEQUE – “GENERIC ACTRESS”

Paycheque, the LA-based duo of Allison Goldfarb and Jackson MacIntosh (Sheer Agony, TOPS) will release their self-titled debut on June 12 via Millions and Millions. This is the album’s opening song. They say: “In LA, when you go out, you end up spending a lot of time standing outside of whatever event or party you’ve decided to attend. You’re on the sidewalk, you’re in a strip mall parking lot, you’re on a patio. You smoke, you bump into friends, and you eventually realize you missed half the set you came to see, you never actually made it inside the gallery, the party is winding down. This song is an ode to never quite making it inside. Sonically, we think of this song as kind of a synth-pop version of an early Cars hit; it’s our attempt to make a propulsive new wave anthem.”

TEEN SUICIDE – “SUFFERING (MIKE’S WAY)”

Teen Suicide have given us a final preview of their new album Nude descending staircase headless before its release this Friday. About “Suffering (Mike’s Way),” they say, “we’ve been very excited to release this song, and hope that yall like it as much as we do. It’s one we started writing maybe four years ago, played on a few tours (pretty badly, i might add) before revisiting it more recently with Niko for this album & really working out exactly what we wanted from it. It’s one of my favorites we’ve ever made & I’ve been excited to share it.”

JJEROME87 – “TRACK AND FIELD”

alt-J frontman Joe Newman has announced his debut album as JJerome87, The Canyon, due out June 26 via Mushroom Music/Virgin. About new single “Track and Field,” he says, “I wrote Track and Field quickly. I see this song as an early ‘90s American montage that focuses on two college kids falling for each other on a college athletics track. The name ‘Lamorna’ I chose to honour my friend’s dog, who ran off a cliff. Other notable bits of trivia include nods to Gerry Rafferty’s Right Down The Line; the first song on a long list of songs I wish I had written and the triple-take line at the start of the song was inspired by Patrick Stewart’s 2013 viral video in which he performs the quadruple take. Track and Field is a song to sing along to in a car going somewhere nice… a beach, or through a tunnel in a helicopter, Mission Impossible style. Enjoy.”

GEM CLUB – “SWORE (EMERALD PRESS)”

Ahead of the release of their new album Emerald Press this Friday, Gem Club have shared a final advance single, “Swore (Emerald Press),” which features vocals from Ieva Berberian. Christopher Barnes says, “Ieva and I met in a class at Berklee – we were both the kids who sat in the back. I remember being struck by how distinct her songwriting was and how her voice made me feel when she sang; you could feel her in her work right away; It’s been a privilege to come back to gem club and sing together again on ‘Swore (Emerald Press)’. A lot of time has passed for both of us, but music can blur that – softening and folding time in on itself until it feels like maybe no time has passed at all.”

TRUCK VIOLENCE – “NEW JESUS”

Montreal noise/hardcore/metal quartet Truck Violence has announced a new album, The weathervane is my body, which will be out June 26 via Mothland (Canada) & The Flenser (Rest of the World). Here’s the first single which is “a rant about the blatant fascistic slide occurring both to the south of our border and on screen.”

PARTS & LABOR – “ENDLESS CYCLE PTS. 1-4”

NYC experimental indie rock band Parts & Labor called it quits in 2012, but are now back in action with a new album and live dates announced. Set of All Sets, their first album in 15 years, is a double LP and will be out July 10 via Ernest Jenning Record Co. “Endless Cycle Pts. 1-4,” which represent 20 soaring, ambitious minutes of Set of All Sets, are out now.
