So many artists, so many songs, so little time. Each week we review a handful of new albums (of all genres), round up even more new music that we’d call “indie,” and talk about what metal is coming out. We post music news, track premieres, and more all day. We update a playlist weekly of some of our current favorite tracks. Here’s a daily roundup with a bunch of interesting, newly released songs in one place.
NILÜFER YANYA – “CALL IT LOVE”
“It takes a certain kind of bravery to fully trust your instincts,” Nilüfer Yanya says regarding “Call it Love,” the latest single from her upcoming album My Method Actor. “It’s about allowing your calling to lead you, to let it guide you somewhere. Let that consume you and destroy you.”

KATIE MALCO – “FATAL ATTRACTION” FT. LAURA STEVENSON
Katie Malco’s new single is named after the 1987 film and features vocals from Laura Stevenson. “I watched a lot of erotic thrillers in lockdown and that’s when I wrote Fatal Attraction,” she says. “I recorded it at home in between tours, and we recorded Laura’s beautiful vocals while we were on tour in the states last year. I can’t describe to you how much I adore this woman’s voice. It’s like listening to a bird at dawn. One day I’ll tell you the story of how we stayed up late to record it all but then my hardrive malfunctioned so we had to record it all again the next day…Laura didn’t even shout at me and she should have. I have so much to say about this song but I think in the first instance you should hear it with your own ears and have your own interpretation before I say a damn word.”

NATION OF LANGUAGE – “WEAK IN YOUR LIGHT” (CLASSIXX REMIX)
Electronic duo Classixx have done one of their signature remixes for Nation of Language’s “Weak in Your Light.” The band say, “The idea of having Classixx remix of one of our songs was almost intimidating to think about – as they really are elite-level operators in this space. Their transformation blew us away on first listen, making this particular song feel like it can exist in so many new settings. The tone of the original is still intact but hearing it with newfound echoes of early Madonna, Arthur Russell, and Vince Clarke all mixed together so seamlessly has turned it into something with a joy we’d never quite imagined was possible.”

MIDWIFE – “ROCK N ROLL NEVER FORGETS”
Midwife’s fourth album, No Depression in Heaven, is out in September, and she’s shared the second single, the murky, haunting “Rock N Roll Never Forgets.”

MICHAEL KIWANUKA – “FLOATING PARADE”
Michael Kiwanuka will be on tour with Brittany Howard this fall and ahead of that he’s shared this effervescent, string-laden single that was co-produced by Danger Mouse and Inflo. More like this, please.

HELLO MARY – “THREE”
Hello Mary announced a new album, Emita Ox, due out on September 13 via Frenchkiss. It includes their June single “0%,” and they’ve shared the second single, “Three,” which was produced by Alex Farrar.

BRAXE + FALCON – “ALL THIS LOVE” (FEAT. BIBIO)
French Touch vets Alan Braxe and DJ Falcon are back with a new single featuring Bibio. “In 2023 I received a remix request from Warp Records for a beautiful song calling ‘S.O.L.’ by Bibio featuring Olivier St. Louis,” says Braxe. “Bibio was happy with my remix and afterward we started to talk about music in general and music gear until the point we felt like doing an original track together would be a lot of fun. So I sent him a very basic demo DJ Falcon and I did, and from there we started to build the song remotely – actually for now we’ve never met him in person. We chose addiction for the song’s theme; it’s not specified if it’s an addiction to substances or a relationship, it’s more about the inner combat to recover from such situations.”

ILLUMINATI HOTTIES – “POWER”
Illuminati Hotties’ anticipated new album POWER is out next month, and she’s shared the title track. “This song feels scary to share,” she writes on Instagram, “I can’t tell you the relief I felt when I cracked open the meaning of this song & also the fear that if I spilled my guts I couldn’t step away from reality. I hope you find comfort in ‘Power’ & I RLY hope you’re ready to SING this thing with me on tour.”

WIKI & TONY SELTZER – “BIRDS”
NYC rapper Wiki and his frequent producer Tony Seltzer have shared their third consecutive collaborative single, and it’s another very good one.

TORO Y MOI – “HEAVEN” FT. KEVIN ABSTRACT & LEV
“Heaven,” the latest single from Toro y Moi’s new album Hole Erth, features Kevin Abstract and Lev, and interpolates Broken Social Scene’s “Anthems for a Seventeen Year-Old Girl.” “As a musician, you’ll occasionally hear stories about these songs that a songwriter said, ‘…just came out of thin air.’ Or ‘they were written in a matter of minutes or hours– they just have a nonchalant magic to them,'” Toro y Moi says. “‘Heaven’ was just that. It was my first day of the Hole Erth sessions at Different Fur in San Francisco. I asked Grace Coleman, the engineer to open a random session from a batch of demos from my studio. Within an hour of opening the session I found myself wrapping a second verse and it occurred to me I might have a song worth finishing. It was a moment of literally letting go of these songs and into someone else’s hands (and computer) and taking on the songwriter role fully, not thinking about production or the mix and just listening to my thoughts. I ultimately found myself writing about moments of processing and realizing that the journey of the musician is a constant practice, paying attention to one aspect only allows room for something to slip away. How does one make a decision when the options presented are all poetically polarizing?”

TRAIL OF LIES – “UNBROKEN” (ft. SEBASTIAN PABA OF REGULATE)
Trail of Lies’ new LP Only The Strong comes out next week (July 19 via Triple B), and its latest single some pretty brutal stuff “about not giving up, not giving in and how struggle is necessary for success,” with an assist from Regulate’s Sebastian Paba.

DEER TICK – “BIG BLACK HEARSE”
Deer Tick’s new EP Contractural Obligations is due out this Friday (7/12) via ATO Records, and they’ve given us another early taste with the rocking “Big Black Hearse.”

FAMILY DINNER – “SHINE ON”
Long Island’s Family Dinner have shared a new single from their upcoming debut album God Looks Out For Fools, and it’s a dreamy, grungy song written about a friend who suddenly lost their life at a young age.

KISHI BASHI – “MAKE BELIEVE” FT. LINQUA FRANQA
“This song started as a beat that reminded me of that proto-funk-rap from the early ‘80s,” Kishi Bashi says of “Make Believe,” the latest single from his new album Kantos. “The only way the verse vocals sounded appropriate was if there was that kind of rapping, so I gave it a go! I got my friend Mariah (Linqua Franqa), who i used to collaborate with a lot in Athens, to help out.”

VELOCITY GIRL – “COPACETIC (PEEL SESSION VERSION)”
’90s indie rock / shoegaze group Velocity Girl are releasing a “remixed and expanded” edition of their 1993 debut album, Copacetic, in August and this is one of the “expanded” bits, their Peel Session version of the album’s title track.

OK COWGIRL – “LARRY DAVID”
This song is very cute and so is the video. Pretty pretty good. OK Cowgirl’s debut album Couldn’t Save Us From My Gut is out August 16.

CORNELIUS & HARUOMI HOSONO – “BARA TO YAJU”
Cornelius just released a new album and a brand new single and now he’s shared his cover of Yellow Magic Orchestra co-founder Haruomi Hosono’s “Bara To Yaju” from the forthcoming Hosono House compilation.

FAKE FRUIT – “MÁS O MENOS”
Here’s a ripper of a new song from Fake Fruit’s upcoming second album Mucho Mistrust.

YNYS – “SHINDIG”
“I haven’t really worked out what this song is about,” says Welsh artist Dylan Hughes (Race Horses / Radio Luxembourg) of the latest single from his new band Ynys. “The lyrics jump all over the place and it’s a bit surreal; it’s got a few lines that still make me laugh. I think the title came from the fact that I had a Shindig! Magazine on the piano stand for about six months (I really do need to tidy up). I hear a bit of Sparks’ / Talking Heads influence coming through on this track.” Ynys’ new album Dosbarth Nos (Night Class) is out this week.

POM POKO – “MY FAMILY”
Olso’s Pom Poko will release their new album Champion on August 16 and new single “My Family” is a joyous blast of high energy, ultracatchy alt-rock.

THE DESLONDES – “I’LL DO IT”
“I wanted to make a song offering dog-like support to a friend,” says The Deslondes’ Howe Pearson. “Just some simple love and affirmation. Like a more wholesome take on ‘I Wanna Be Your Dog.’ It’s not all we need – it’s just the least we can do for each other, which hopefully counts for something. The band and Andrija arranged the song together, and we tweaked some of the lyrics. JJ came up with the riff in the middle, and Riley played the flexatone.” The Deslondes’ new album Roll it Out is out September 6.

GALAXIE 500 – “SHOOT YOU DOWN” & “I WANNA LIVE”
conic late-’80s indie rock trio Galaxie 500 recorded a lot of non-album material during their short run, including singles, b-sides, radio sessions, compilation/tribute album songs and more. Many of those have been gathered up for new compilation Uncollected Noise New York ’88-’90. Here are two that have never been released before.

MICA LEVI – “SLOB AIR”
These days Mica Levi is known for their eerie, amazing film scores (Under the Skin, Jackie, The Zone of Interest) but they got their start in avant pop group Micachu & The Shapes and continue to make solo, non-composer music. Powered by syncopated drumbeat and swirling strings, Mica’s Hyperdub debut, “slob air,” is both danceable and cinematic as it stretches across 12 beautiful, mesmerizing minutes.

BARTEES STRANGE – “LIE 95”
We’ve been anticipating a new album from Bartees Strange sometime this year, and it looks like it might be coming soon; he shared a new single, “Lie 95,” today, and you can read more about it here.

QUIVERS – “PINK SMOKE”
Quivers have just shared a third single from their upcoming album Oyster Cuts, the perfectly strummy, open-hearted “Pink Smoke.”

LIFEGUARD – “MINISTRY / ENERGIE” & “TELEPATHIC LOVE” (WIPERS COVER)
Chicago trio Lifegaurd are back with a new two-song single that’s out now via Matador. It’s their first release since their 2023 Matador debut (which collected two previous EPs) and features slashing new original “Ministry / Energie” and a cover of “Telepathic Love” by influential Portland post-punks Wipers.

FIELD MUSIC – “SIX WEEKS, NINE WELLS”
Peter and David Brewis have announced their ninth Field Music album and first in four years, Limits of Language, which will be out October 11 via Memphis Industries. It also marks the 20th anniversary of the band. The first single is David Brewis’ “Six Weeks, Nine Wells,” which opens the album. Waves of synths crash against big drums. It’s like nothing Field Music have ever made before but is instantly recognizable as theirs.

J SPACEMAN & JOHN COXON – “MOTHER’S MILK”
Spiritualized’s J Spaceman and John Coxon are releasing an album of the live soundtrack that they composed and performed for William Eggleston film Stranded in Canton back in 2015.

FCUKERS – “HOMIE DON’T SHAKE”
NYC ’90s-inspired dance-pop trio Fcukers have announced their debut EP, Baggy$$, and new single “Homie Don’t Shake” is out now. Read more here.

The Get Up Kids have announced a 25th anniversary reissue of Something to Write Home About, which includes several previously unreleased demos. A “Holiday” demo with different lyrics and the first-ever music video for the album version of the song are both out today.
