So many artists, so many songs, so little time. Each week we review a handful of new albums (of all genres), round up even more new music that we’d call “indie,” and talk about what metal is coming out. We post music news, track premieres, and more all day. We update a playlist weekly of some of our current favorite tracks. Here’s a daily roundup with a bunch of interesting, newly released songs in one place.
TANUKICHAN – “IT GETS EASIER” (ft. WISP)
Tanukichan (Hannah van Loon) has shared the Wisp collab from her upcoming Circles EP, and it’s a woozy, ethereal song that finds each artist taking their own verses and eventually building up to some soaring harmonies.

NICOLE MIGLIS – “SLEEP ALL DAY”
Nicole Miglis’ anticipated debut solo album Myopia is out this Friday, and ahead of that she’s shared a final advance single, “Sleep All Day,” which melds electronic and orchestral sounds.

DANA GAVANSKI – “OUGHT TO FEEL”
Dana Gavanski has shared an outtake from this year’s Late Slap, and it’s a whimsical baroque pop that’s just as strong as anything on the proper album.

KATIE GAVIN – “CASUAL DRUG USE”
“This is a song about being young and on bad behavior, and the comfort of having friends by your side,” MUNA’s Katie Gavin says of the latest single off her debut solo album, What A Relief. “I wrote it in 2016 after a day trip I took with a friend, and so I thought it would be sweet to film the video on a road trip I had planned with my childhood best friend. The different colored potions in the video are meant to be a stand-in for whatever external substance we use to change our internal states.”

BALANCE AND COMPOSURE – “ANY MEANS”
Balance and Composure have shared another song from their first album in 8 years, and it’s an airy, suspenseful rock song that finds the band in great form.

ALAN SPARHAWK (LOW) – “GET STILL”
Here’s a second song from Low co-founder Alan Sparhawk’s new solo album White Roses, My God. “Get Still” is warm with woozy synths and pitch-shifted vocals.

LUCIUS – “OLD TAPE” FT. THE WAR ON DRUGS’ ADAM GRANDUCIEL
Lucius are working on a new album, expected out in 2025, and ahead of their tour with The National and The War on Drugs, they’ve given us a first preview of it, “Old Tape,” which features The War on Drugs’ Adam Granduciel. “We wrote ‘Old Tape’ while working on new music at Danny’s studio in LA; we were discussing the loops we get stuck in, the rabbit holes our minds go down, even getting nerdy on epigenetics—the voices in our heads that might not be our own, and ultimately, how to quiet that noise and let it all go,” the band say. “We wanted to make something that was both driving and uplifting and no one does it better than The War on Drugs…so after building a landscape, we called our dear friend, Adam, to see if he’d lend his beautiful vocals and guitar. He graciously and enthusiastically accepted and it really brought the track to life. Produced and mixed by our longtime bandmate Dan Molad.”

SONDRE LERCHE – “SEPTEMBER SOMETHING”
One of the bonus tracks on Sondre Lerche’s upcoming 20th anniversary edition of Two Way Monologue is this reworked recording of unreleased song “September Something.” Says Sondre, “‘September Something’ felt – at the moment I wrote it, at least – like the centerpiece of the album that would become Two Way Monologue. But the excitement and self-confidence with which I had written the song gradually evaporated with each attempt we made at recording the song. By the time we were mixing the album, ‘September Something’ was not even finalized, and remained incomplete and alone on my hard drive. Hearing it again today, I instantly remembered the burst of inspiration I had felt — and the humiliating disappointment as it dawned on me that this was nobody’s favorite, not even my own. I could sympathize with what the original lyrics had been trying but failing to express, and I now felt compelled to give my old self a hand. I tasked my former guitar player Kato Ådland with rearranging and finalizing the original recording, using as much as possible from the 2002 sessions, including my old vocals where possible. In order for me to want to share ‘September Something’ with the world, the lyrics would need a lot of help and revisions. I gave it another go, wanting to fulfill my intentions from back then, with the added luxury of time and perspective. I now feel happy to have been able to free the song of its composer’s original failure to rise to the challenge. And to get to unite my 2002 voice with the sound of my current self, as we trade lines and harmonize, 22 years apart. As the observant listener may notice, the outro section of the song went on to become a part of the Dan In Real Life score, creating a life of its own, beyond its frail beginnings.”

EMILY FREMBGEN – “DRINK TONIGHT”
Emily Frembgen’s new album No Hard Feelings is out in September, and she’s shared another new single from it, “Drink Tonight.” “Years ago a chef I had just met asked if I knew anybody who played Americana music for ‘Americana Monday’ at his restaurant which was connected to Knitting Factory in Brooklyn,” she says. “At the time my music wasn’t what you’d call ‘Americana’ but I lied and said it was and secured the weekly gig and free fried chicken. I started rediscovering the music I loved in that genre and I wrote ‘Drink Tonight’ as sort of an anthem, opening the show with it every week. I wrote it one Monday where I was resigned to not drinking but I got in a fight with my boyfriend and decided I would in fact drink on that night.”

CHICANO BATMAN – “TANTO ARRIBA COMO ABAJO”
Ahead of their UK tour, Chicano Batman has shared this new single produced by Sam Cohen. “’Tanto Arriba Como Abajo’ was written and recorded spontaneously during a session break at our bassist Eduardo’s studio,” says guitarist Carlos Arevalo. “Most of what you hear is what was played in the room by five musicians completely in the moment. It has been some time since we’ve released an instrumental, so to remedy that we’ve decided to share this one from the vault.”

JACKSON BROWNE – “EVERYWHERE I LOOK” (DON HEFFINGTON COVER)
Tonight I’ll Go Down Swingin’: A Tribute To Don Heffington, a benefit for Sweet Relief Musicians Fund, is out on October 18 via Nine Mile Records, and they’ve shared Jackson Browne’s take on previously unreleased Heffington track “Everywhere I Look.” “I knew Don from the Largo, playing with the Watkins Family Hour,” Browne says. “His drumming was so amazingly solid and assured, and he had the combined strength and sensitivity to make that quiet stage and all those acoustic instruments work. Sometimes I would see him at the guitar-pulls at Benmont Tench’s house, sitting there with a snare drum between his knees, adding his rhythm and feel to the songwriters who were playing various guitars, Benmont on piano. I didn’t realize that he wrote songs until I heard his album Gloryland, and I was so taken by his originality. Eventually, I got to hear him do his own show, and again, was just knocked out by the songs, and that Bakersfield Beatnik persona. There’s no accounting for why somebody becomes a songwriter. But I think of him as inhabiting the same Los Angeles as Warren Zevon, Lowell George and Tom Waits. The breadth and depth of his songwriting are on display here in this loving tribute by his friends. He asked me to sing ‘Everywhere I Look.’ The arrangement is based closely on the demo he gave me, with Sebastian Steinberg playing bass. For the guitar, I called on Greg Leisz, who played with Don and Sebastian in the Watkins Family Hour. Lots of people knew Don longer and better than I did. I’m so grateful for the times I got to play with him. I really miss him. He is, and always will be, an inspiration.”

Chastity has shared another song off his upcoming self-titled album, and this one finds him in breezy, folky alt-rock mode.

CHRISTIAN LEE HUTSON – “BEAUTY SCHOOL” FT. KATY KIRBY
Christian Lee Hutson’s new album Paradise Pop. 10 is out next month, and he’s given us another early taste with “Beauty School,” which features Katy Kirby. “Beauty school is a love song to myself and to you,” he says. “To all the people we’ve been and to all the people we will be.”

WORLDS GREATEST DAD – “TAKING ONE FOR THE TEAM”
worlds greatest dad have shared another song off their upcoming album Better Luck Next Time, and this one’s a delicately soaring emo ballad inspired by an experience in which vocalist/guitarist Maddie Duncan was driving on the interstate and noticed that a dog had run out into the road. She tried to drive slowly behind it to protect it from other cars, but it kept running and dodging cars and was eventually hit. “It felt like a really fucked up fate or something and kind of sent me into a fear of death spiral,” Maddie says. “Being able to help as much as you can with something, while also not feeling responsible if it fails is really hard. This song is about that feeling of responsibility and helplessness.”

DUENDITA – “BORN WITH POWER”
Queens neo-soul singer duendita has announced a new EP, The Mind Is a Miracle, due September 27. The first single is the soaring “Born With Power.”

THEY ARE GUTTING A BODY OF WATER – “ANA ORINT” (ft. SWORD II)
They Are Gutting A Body both make various types of hazy, noisy, experimental indie rock, and they come together on this new song “ana orint.”

SYDNEY SPRAGUE – “I TRIED MY BEST” (ft. KEVIN DEVINE)
Sydney Sprague has shared a new song from the upcoming deluxe edition of somebody in hell still loves you, and it features Kevin Devine. “Having Kevin Devine on this song is seriously such an honor,” Sydney says. “It feels very poetic to me because this song came from a place of uncertainty if my music would ever be heard or if there was even a point to making music at all, but now because of it I got to work with one of my favorite artists. I used to rent Kevin’s CDs from the library in high school and college and listen to them on repeat in my car, and now I get to hear him sing words I wrote. I’ll just never get over it! I love the way he sounds on it, it turned out to be my favorite song on the record.”

SUBURBAN EYES (MINERAL, CHRISTIE FRONT DRIVE, BOYS LIFE) – “FLOYD”
Suburban Eyes is a supergroup with members of three ’90s emo bands, but the songs we’ve heard from their upcoming self-titled debut album have been more in the ’90s indie/alternative rock realm, and they’re great at this kind of thing too. The latest taste is “Floyd.”

DREAMLESS VEIL (INTER ARMA, ARTIFICAL BRAIN) – “SATURNISM”
Dreamless Veil is a new metal band with some familiar faces, including Inter Arma/Artificial Brain vocalist Mike Paparo (he’s been singing for AB since 2023), Artificial Brain guitarist Dan Garguilo, and Psycroptic/Werewolves drummer Dave Haley. “Saturnism,” the second taste of their upcoming debut LP Every Limb Of The Flood, finds them in harsh black metal territory.

LESS THAN JAKE – “NOT MY PROBLEM”
Ska-punk vets Less Than Jake haven’t announced a new album, but this is their third single in a short amount of time. “This song came about in the 11th hour,” says vocalist/guitarist Chris DeMakes. “I was messing around with a synthesizer loop one night, which became the part you hear for the intro of the song. The whole song was built from that, and it came together super fast. The main guitar riff is quirky and fun. The lyric is classic LTJ. A really fun song mixed with a sad lyric.”

JADE HAIRPINS – “GET ME THE GOOD STUFF”
“Hairpins finally complete the journey from wallflower to bouquet and get the goodest stuff from the deepest depths,” Jonah Falco says of the title track to Jade Hairpins’ upcoming album. “Big punches of an immaterial past where the Happy Mondays played a World Cup final, but the fans were the band and the players were the audience. The world is upside down, and it turns out the centre of the earth is a choir of 45 untrained voices shouting, “You don’t get to know what I’m up to, I’ll tell you when I find out.” Guess, imagine, finesse, fill the stage, and be the show.”

FIGHTMILK – “SUMMER BODIES”
London quartet Fightmilk have announced new album No Souvenirs which will be out November 15 via Fika Recordings. First single “No Souvenirs,” is rousing, anthemic indie rock. “It’s a sad song about death,” says guitarist/vocalist Lily, “but I wanted it to sound huge and final, like I’m putting something to bed.”

LAWRENCE HART – “HEAR UR HEARTBEAT”
London producer Lawrence Hart is back with this single via DoubleSix/Domino. “’Hear Ur Heartbeat’ is about someone connecting with their own emotions through introspection and finally reaching a deeper communion with themselves and their community,’ says Hart. ‘The verses represent the introspective part of that journey and the choruses the moment of advent and union.” It’s also a banger.

SEAFOAM WALLS – “CABIN FEVER”
Miami band Seafoam Walls will release new album Standing Too Close To The Elephant In The Room on October 18 via Dion Dia and they’ve just shared the first single. “‘Cabin Fever’ describes a time where I was on tour with a band I used to play with and the community they introduced me to, it felt strange how homogenized they were,” lead singer Jayan Bertrand says. “The second verse is critical of the world’s mass consumption and being willfully ignorant to maintain happiness.”

BURR OAK – “ANNABELLE”
Chicago’s Burr Oak will release the Annabelle EP on September 20 and this is the title track. Says Burr: ‘She had a baby, Annabelle.’ With no money, family to reach out to for help or access to abortion resources, twenty-three-year-old Annabelle is left with no choice other than to have the baby and raise the child without the help of her ex-boyfriend, Adam. Alone, overwhelmed and having to care for a newborn day and night, Annabelle slips deep into postpartum depression.”

JERRY PAPER – “MOONSTRUCK”
Jerry Paper’s new album Inbetweezer is out September 27 and here’s the latest single which was written after a particularly grueling tour. “Immediately when I got back from tour, I knew something big in my life had to change, so ‘Moonstruck’ is kind of a meditation on joy even while the earth is shifting beneath you.”

FONTAINES D.C. – “IN THE MODERN WORLD”
Fontaines D.C. release their fourth album, ROMANCE, this week. Made with producer James Ford, it’s a real level-up for the Dublin band, taking them into new melodic territory without pushing aside what made people love them on their first three records. Case in point is new single “In the Modern World,” a sweeping, string-laden song that reminds me a little of ’90s alt-rock ballads. Is “In the Modern World” their “Disarm”?

THE HARD QUARTET – “RIO’S SONG”
The Hard Quartet — the new group featuring Stephen Malkmus (Pavement), Matt Sweeney (Chavez), Jim White (Dirty Three) and Emmett Kelly (Ty Segall) — have announced their self-titled debut album, which will be out October 4 via Matador. New single “Rio’s Song” features lead vocals by Sweeney and a video that pays homage to The Rolling Stones’ “Waitin’ on a Friend.” Shot on low-res videotape, the video uses the same East Village stoop the Stones did in the video (also the location for Led Zeppelin’s Physical Graffiti), as well as iconic dive The International Bar. They also recreated some of the weirder shots from the original video.

GEORDIE GREEP (BLACK MIDI) – “HOLY, HOLY”
black midi are on hiatus, but frontman Geordie Greep has just announced his debut solo album, The New Sound, which is out October 4 via Rough Trade. The first single from the album is “Holy, Holy,” which is unlike anything Greep has released before. A lascivious tale of a nightclub encounter, it plays like loungy, big-band disco — or as Greep describes it, “noughties indie pop chords and bravura Latin big band arrangements.”

JD MCPHERSON – “DON’T TRAVEL THROUGH THE NIGHT ALONE”
JD McPherson will release new album Nite Owls in September, and it’s a record that was as influenced by Depeche Mode as Duane Eddy. That’s apparent on new single “Don’t Travel Through the Night Alone,” which has the dark-and-twangy vibe of being the only car on a desert highway at 2 AM when you wonder “is the full moon enough to light my way” and consider switching off your headlights just to find out.

CAROLINE SAYS – “FADED AND GOLDEN”
The first single from Caroline Says’ third album is “Faded and Golden,” a lovely bit of country-tinged pop, leavened by pedal steel and Sallee’s gossamer harmonies
