So many artists, so many songs, so little time. Each week we review a handful of new albums (of all genres), round up even more new music that we’d call “indie,” and talk about what metal is coming out. We post music news, track premieres, and more all day. We update a playlist weekly of some of our current favorite tracks. Here’s a daily roundup with a bunch of interesting, newly released songs in one place.
GAAHLS WYRD (GORGOROTH) – “BRAIDING THE STORIES”
Former Gorgoroth vocalist Gaahl has announced a new Gaahls Wyrd album, Braiding the Stories, due June 6 via Season of Mist. Here’s the brooding, towering title track.

SARAH MARY CHADWICK – “TAKE ME OUT TO A BAR”
The latest single from Sarah Mary Chadwick’s new album, Take Me Out To a Bar / What Am I, Gatsby?, is another minimal but harrowing piano ballad.

JONI – “STILL YOUNG”
I still think it’s hard to see a folk singer named simply “Joni” and not think of Joni Mitchell, but once you get past that, you’ll see that this Joni also writes great songs, like “Still Young,” the latest taste of her debut album Things I Left Behind (due April 11 via Keeled Scales).

CHAIN (MOM JEANS, GRADUATING LIFE, JUST FRIENDS) – “NO POWER”
Members of Mom Jeans, Graduating Life, and Just Friends have come together to dive into ’90s grunge with their new band Chain. The band’s debut album No Spirit comes out this Friday (3/14), and here’s a taste.

PROVOKER – “ANOTHER BOY”
Provoker have announced a new album, Mausoleum, due May 9 via YEAR0001. Here’s the propulsive, post-punky pop of new single “Another Boy.”

BRONCHO – “I SWEAR”
Broncho’s first album in six years, Natural Pleasure, is out next month, and they’ve shared the third single, “I Swear.” Vocalist and guitarist Ryan Lindsey says, “‘I Swear’ had been running around in my head for years until I finally did something about it. I always knew it would be on this record somehow.”

COMMON SAGE – “DROWN”
Brooklyn emo/post-hardcore band Common Sage follow last year’s Closer To with a new standalone single, “Drown,” which feels straight out of the mid 2000s Long Island emo scene.

CIRCUIT DES YEUX – “TRUTH”
“If “Truth” were an object it would be a multi-faced geode that is in constant rotation,” says Haley Fohr of the latest Circuit Des Yeux single. “Its meaning is continually shifting and lending itself to the way the listener perceives it. The root of its creation comes from a vivid dream I had in 2015 while staying in Blackrock Territory just outside of Dublin, Ireland.” New album Halo On the Inside is out this week.

MEKONS – “THE WESTERN DESIGN”
“Now hardly remembered, Oliver Cromwell’s Western Design dramatically changed England’s engagement with the wider world,” Mekons say of the inspiration behind their new reggae-inflected track. “It brought the state into the business of colonisation and Jamaica became Britain’s number one off shore imperial profit-generator.” Mekons’ new album Horror is out April 4.

DEATH & VANILLA – “INTRO”
Swedish trio Death And Vanilla have announced their new album which is an interpretation of the soundtrack to cult 1968 BBC TV movie Whistle And I’ll Come To You. Say the band: “Our first composition for Whistle, “Intro,” started off as a sample of Marleen singing in a tunnel in Austria which established the mood and tone of the soundtrack.”

SEXTILE – “S IS FOR”
Sextile’s Mel Scaduto explains the title of their new song: “It’s not super relevant to Sextile but with my other project ‘S. Product’ I was always asked what the S is for – it’s always really been a Scaduto product to me. But this song is sassy way to explain how many things the S could be.” New album yes, please. is out May 2.

JOSEPH SHABASON, SPENCER ZAHN, VIBRANT MATTER, THOM GILL – “A RIVER A MUSEUM”
Saxophonist, composer and Destroyer collaborator Joseph Shabason has teamed with Spencer Zahn, Vibrant Matter, and Thom Gill for a new two-song 12″. “A year ago Spencer came up to Toronto so that we could make some music together. We teamed up with the TO crew and got Thom and Kieran to add their special spice to the songs that we were working on,” Shabason says. “a river, a museum” is bright and compelling.

THE CONVENIENCE – “OPPORTUNITY”
“‘Opportunity’ existed as an extended jam for months before being edited and spliced down into a form,” says The Convenience’s Nick Corson of their skronky-yet-tuneful new song. “During recording, various household objects were shoved in guitar strings to get those percussive sounds. Lyrics are somewhat inspired by the film Opening Night.”

BEN KWELLER – “DEPRESSION” (FEAT. COCONUT RECORDS)
Ben Kweller has shared another song off of his upcoming album, Cover the Mirrors, which is about the death of his son, Dorian. “Depression” features Coconut Records, aka actor and musician Jason Schwartzman. “When Dorian died in the crash I went into a spiral. Nothing was real. All of these new songs speak of my grief journey but none cut as deep as “Depression”. I’m not hiding the ball here,” Kweller says.

THESE NEW PURITANS – “BELLS” & “INDUSTRIAL LOVE SONG” FT CAROLINE POLACHEK
UK duo These New Puritans will release a new album, Crooked Wing, on May 23 via Domino and they’ve shared two dark ballads, including Caroline Polachek collab “Industrial Love Song” (which is not industrial music).

FLYING LOTUS – “OXYGENE”
Flying Lotus unveiled the first track off the soundtrack to his new film Ash, “Oxygene.”

TY SEGALL – “FANTASTIC TOMB”
Ty Segall releases a lot of albums but his upcoming Possession could have much wider appeal. Check out the first single.

MATT BERNINGER – “BONNET OF PINS”
The National’s Matt Berninger announced his second solo album, and gave us a first taste with “Bonnet of Pins.” Read more about it here.

MARK PRITCHARD & THOM YORKE – “THIS CONVERSATION IS MISSING YOUR VOICE”
Thom Yorke and Mark Pritchard will release a new collaborative album, Tall Tales, on May 9 via Warp Records. This is Thom’s first release for Warp and mixes his unique melodic style with Pritchard’s collection of rare synthesizers.

LOU TIDES (SHARON VAN ETTEN & THE ATTACHMENT THEORY) – “AUTOSTATIC!”
Teeny Lieberson is currently a member of Sharon Van Etten & The Attachment Theory, but she’s an indie veteran, having played in Luke Temple’s Here We Go Magic and led TEEN alongside her sisters Katherine and Lizzie throughout the 2010s. (She’s also spent time as a touring member of Sleater-Kinney.) These days she makes her own music via solo project Lou Tides and will release a new album, Autostatic!, on May 30 via Switch Hit Records. She made the album with co-producer Bartees Strange, and here’s the title track.
