So many artists, so many songs, so little time. Each week we review a handful of new albums (of all genres), round up even more new music that we’d call “indie,” and talk about what metal is coming out. We post music news, track premieres, and more all day. We update a playlist weekly of some of our current favorite tracks. Here’s a daily roundup with a bunch of interesting, newly released songs in one place.
ROSE CITY BAND – “RADIO SONG”
There aren’t that many radio stations that play Rose City Band, the the sunny, jammy band led by Ripley Johnson (Moon Duo, Wooden Shjips), but there should be. “Some of the songs on the new album have little nods to my past life, my college years, living in California,” says Johnson. “The title gives it away, but ‘Radio Song’ really did feel a song I would hear on the radio back in the day, driving around Santa Cruz in my ’64 Plymouth Fury, with its mono AM radio. I appreciate how rock and roll songs can be simultaneously really simple and familiar, but also emotionally affecting at the same time. I guess that’s part of their power.” Rose City Band’s new album Sol Y Sombra is out January 24

SQUID – “BUILDING 650”
“‘Building 650’ is a song inspired by our first ever trip to Japan,” says Squid’s Ollie Judge. “We played the Summersonic festival in 2022, luckily we were booked to play 2 days after the COVID travel ban had been lifted, because of this we felt like some of the only tourists in Tokyo. On the plane I read In the Miso Soup by Ryu Murikami and watched Lost in Translation out of excitement and later decided to write lyrics about being an outsider visiting Japan, including a very particular type of loneliness one can feel visiting a country that is so different from their own. This loneliness feels exaggerated in Tokyo, on the surface it’s hectic and full of people but when you listen, it’s eerily quiet.” New album Cowards is out February 7 via Warp.

SOPHIE JAMIESON – “VISTA”
Sophie Jamieson’s new album i still want to share is out later this month, and she’s shared another single from it, the dark, solemn “Vista.” “Written in the midst of falling in love, I think I sensed the danger in my own emotions,” she says. “It was intense and rapid, and though I didn’t realise it at the time, this song seems to reveal my awareness of losing myself very quickly. I felt like a child, in good and bad ways. Everything felt electrified, but also lonely. I found myself painting this picture of a long car drive along cliffs under empty skies, constantly ruining everything, always asking for too much.”

DOVES – “COLD DREAMING”
Manchester greats Doves will release their anticipated new album Constellations for the Lonely on Valentine’s Day and here’s the soaring new single. “‘Cold Dreaming’ is a song about forgiveness. Trying to forgive and move on,” says the band’s Andy Williams. “As a minimum, these days, resilience is the thing that you need more than ever, certainly as a musician. Perhaps the lyrics do touch a bit on what we’ve been through.”

MOURN – “ALEGRE Y JOVIAL” & “VERDURA Y SENTIMIENTOS”
Barcelona band Mourn are back with a pair of singles, their first to be sung in Spanish.

EIKO ISHIBASHI – “COMA”
Eiko Ishibashi, who scored director Ryusuke Hamaguchi’s Drive My Car and Evil Does Not Exist, will release new solo album Antigone on March 28 via Drag City. It’s her first record of traditional “songcraft” in seven years. Here’s the first single.

GIRLPUPPY – “WINDOWS”
About her Yo La Tengo-inspired new single, girlpuppy says, “My friend Tom (who plays bass and piano on the track) describes ‘Windows’ as ‘the most girlpuppy song he’s ever heard,’ I’m in love with this song instrumentally because it reminds me of Yo La Tengo, who I was listening to so much of while making this single. ‘Windows’ is about the sadness of a breakup and how no matter how hard you try, you still find things that remind you of your past partner and you know they’re going through the same thing.”

CYMANDE FT JAZZIE B – “HOW WE ROLL”
Cymade’s new album Renascence is out at the end of the month and this very groovy tune gets some help from Soul II Soul’s Jazzie B.

ART D’ECCO – “TRUE BELIEVER”
Canadian musician Art d’Ecco will release new album Serene Dream on Valentine’s Day and here’s the strutting, horn-fueled new single. He says: “‘Serene Demon’ is a metaphor. Think of it as the duality of good and evil. We are all capable of inhabiting both worlds, but most of us intrinsically strive to inhabit the good. ‘True Believer’ is about the seduction of evil from within us. Perhaps it’s a metaphor for depression? Or an invasive thought that implores one to self destruct? I was imagining a tiny little demon dancing on my shoulder, seducing me to come to the dark side.”

BODYBOX – “REAL COCAINE MUZAK” & “SKANTE”
Orlando death metallers Bodybox have announced a new LP, 3, due March 21 via Maggot Stomp, and the first two slammin’ tracks are out now.

CHURCH TONGUE – “BURY ME (ONE THOUSAND TIMES)”
Indianapolis metallic hardcore band Church Tongue, whose guitarist Nicko Calderon is also in Knocked Loose, have signed to Pure Noise (also home to Knocked Loose) and announced a new EP that features three cool guests: Deafheaven’s George Clarke, Initiate’s Crystal Pak, and Twitching Tongues/God’s Hate’s Colin Young. First single “Bury Me (One Thousand Times)” doesn’t feature any guests, but if what you’ve read so far has already piqued your interest, you’re gonna be into this.

L.S. DUNES – “VIOLET”
Post-hardcore supergroup L.S. Dunes have shared the title track from their anticipated sophomore album, and it’s another very promising one.

YOUTH LAGOON – “SPEED FREAK”
Youth Lagoon has announced a new album, Rarely Do I Dream, along with the release of new single “Speed Freak.” Read more here.

Experimental hip hop group clipping. have announced a new album, Dead Channel Sky, along with the release of new single “Change the Channel.” Read more here.

YOUNG WIDOWS – “CALL BULLSHIT”
Louisville post-hardcore/noise rock vets Young Widows have announced their first album in 11 years, Power Sucker, along with new single “Call Bullshit.” Read more here.

BOB MOULD – “HERE WE GO CRAZY”
“On the surface, this is a group of straightforward guitar pop songs,” Bob Mould says of his upcoming album Here We Go Crazy. “I’m refining my primary sound and style through simplicity, brevity, and clarity. Under the hood, there’s a number of contrasting themes. Control and chaos, hypervigilance and helplessness, uncertainty and unconditional love.” Here’s the title track.

HAMILTON LEITHAUSER – “KNOCKIN’ HEART”
With The Walkmen back on hiatus, Hamilton Leithauser has announced a new solo album, This Side of the Island, which will be out March 7 via Glassnote. He co-produced the album with his wife, Anna, and The National’s Aaron Dessner, who also plays on the album. “Knockin’ Heart” shows all those Cafe Carlyle residencies haven’t knocked out all the Walkmen gumption from him.

DIRTY PROJECTORS & S T A R G A Z E – “UNINHABITABLE EARTH, PARAGRAPH ONE”
David Longstreth is releasing his Song of the Earth suite as an album, performed by Dirty Projectors and s t a r g a z e, and he’s shared a track, which you can read more about here.

THROWING MUSES – “SUMMER OF LOVE”
Throwing Muses announced their 11th album, Moonlight Concessions, that will be out March 14 via Fire Records. (It’s their first in five years.) Kristin Hersh wrote many of the songs in South coastal environments but recorded the album in Rhode Island. “In New Orleans the stars look greenish-blue, as it’s below sea level and swamp-lit. But on Moonlight Beach, they glow icy white. All these songs were written in these two glowy places, which helped our sonic technique find itself.” Here’s the new single.

CRYOGEYSER – “STARGIRL”
Cryogeyser’s new self titled is out next month, and they’ve given us another early taste with “Stargirl,” which you can read more about here.

DARKSIDE – “S.N.C.”
DARKSIDE have announced a new album, Nothing, which will be out February 28 via Matador. This is their first album as a trio, with Nicolás Jaar and Dave Harrington adding longtime collaborator, drummer and instrument designer Tlacael Esparza as a full member in 2022. “S.N.C.” starts all krautrock but then goes disco Pink Floyd.

SPELLLING – “PORTRAIT OF MY HEART”

DESTROYER – “BOLOGNA”
“I haven’t written many songs like ‘Bologna,’” says Dan Bejar. “I struggled singing the first and third verses, the most important parts of the song,” says Destroyer’s Dan Bejar of his new song that features Fiver’s Simon Schmidt. “They needed gravity and grit. The threat of disappearing needed to be real. So I called Simone.” New album Dan’s Boogie is out March 28.
