So many artists, so many songs, so little time. Each week we review a handful of new albums (of all genres), round up even more new music that we’d call “indie,” and talk about what metal is coming out. We post music news, track premieres, and more all day. We update a playlist weekly of some of our current favorite tracks. Here’s a daily roundup with a bunch of interesting, newly released songs in one place.
HOT MULLIGAN – “END ERIC SPARROW AND THE LIFE OF HIM”
Emo/pop punk rising stars Hot Mulligan have shared their second new single of 2024, and it’s another instantly-satisfying one. Here’s what vocalist Tades Sanville says about it: “Eric Sparrow beat everyone’s ass in Tony Hawk, and this is what he has wrought. I am not a frontman but have been shoehorned into that role. Interviews where they ask the same questions over and over, strangers running up and touching me at shows, and tons of people dissecting everything they hear me say. Trading tight-knit local scenes for plastic and profiteers. I think a lot of the time that it would be better if my body stayed and didn’t think about it and enjoyed the limelight. Then the part that thinks and gets sad can just disappear. But then who can write?”

NEMAHSIS – “YOU WORE IT BETTER”
Palestinian-Canadian artist Nemahsis is preparing to release her debut album, and she’s shared her second single of the year, “You Wore It Better.” “Andy Warhol predicted that every person will experience 15 seconds of fame but that is only possible if we share the spotlight,” she says. “Accepting that I can’t always wear it best increases the probability of you wearing it better. I believe the ‘main character’ experience is only possible if one settles for mediocrity, at least once. ‘You wore it better’ is me living by this truth.”

DEVARROW – “LIKEWISE”
“This might be the most excited I’ve ever been to release a song, as it marks the first of many, which all make up my upcoming record ‘Heart Shaped Rock’,” says Halifax, NS singer-songwriter Devarrow At its core, it’s my attempt to make a record which feels happy and uplifting while also introspective and gentle – a journey through finding the love of small joys, and caring less about what doesn’t matter, and more about what does. ‘Likewise’ was a real treat to write, and tries to bring these thoughts forward in a high energy kind of way.

SUKI WATERHOUSE – “SUPERSAD”
Suki Waterhouse announced a new double album, Memoir of a Sparklemuffin, due out on September 13 via Sub Pop, and shared the garagey new single “Supersad.” “I tried to write a nineties song you could hear playing at the mall in Clueless or as an opening track for Legally Blonde,” she says.

LOU HAYTER – “STOP THE RAIN” (AVERAGE WHITE BAND COVER)
Former New Young Pony Club keyboardist Lou Hayter has a knack for ’70s covers. She did wonders with Steely Dan’s “Time Out of Mind” on her solo debut album and now here’s her take on Average White Band’s “Stop the Rain.” Says Lou, “Stop the Rain has always been a favourite song of mine. The song itself is about love but I think it can be applied to a lot of things going on in the world at the moment, and wanting the rain to stop is a metaphor for the bigger picture. I worked hard on the production to stay reverent to the original and try to do it justice as I love it so much. My nephew Chris helped out with the guitar so it’s a family affair.”

MURA MASA – “WE ARE MAKING OUT” FT. YEULE
Mura Masa’s new single features vocals from yeule, and they star in the official video. It arrives ahead of Mura Masa’s Berghain set on June 29.

ONE TRUE PAIRING (EX WILD BEASTS) – “BE STRONG”
Former Wild Beast co-leader Tom Fleming is back with a new One True Pairing single. “You search the streets, trying every door. All locked,” says Tom. “The cold night stretches out ahead, utterly indifferent to you. Everything has fallen silent and everyone has gone. To gather up all the things that led here would take forever, but you have to do it. This song is for Jenny, who showed me that true strength is in tenderness and brute force is worthless. It’s a gentler song for sure but it’s heartfelt and means a lot to me. A love song. Things can change.”

JADE HAIRPINS – “DRIFTING SUPERSTITION”
Jonah Falco and Mike Haliechuk from Fucked Up announced their sophomore album as Jade Hairpins, Get Me the Good Stuff, due out on September 13 via Merge. About lead single “Drifting Superstition,” Falco says, “The song is about the double dead end of not trusting yourself enough to make good decisions, musically wrapped in a Mondays-meets-Bolan, funky filo pastry. With the video I am trying to bring together a simplified and lighthearted sense of the deeper contradictions and folkloric fantasies taken from the lyrics into something in the visual world of Pet Shop Boys’ ‘It Couldn’t Happen Here’ and Lina Wertmüller.”

MALICE K – “WEED”
Malice K’s debut full-length album, AVANTI, is out in August, and he’s shared the third single, “Weed.” “I think the context of the lyrics have a crossover with several themes in my life,” he says. “Certain unhealthy relationships, and a general sense of struggling to overcome personal obstacles.”

SIMON FISHER TURNER – “TURNING SLOWLY”
Verteran singer songwriter and the artist formerly known as The King of Luxembourg, Simon Fisher Turner will release new album Instability of The Signal on August 2 via Mute. “Turning Slowly” is a gorgeous ambient track featuring strings by the Elysian Collective.

OURI – “QUIET DRUMMING” FT. JONAH YANO
Montreal-based artist Ouri follows her recent single “Baby Has a Frown” with “Quiet Drumming,” which features Japanese Canadian musician Jonah Yano. “When I had an afternoon with Jonah in my studio last summer, I knew that the music we made couldn’t feel like fiction, it had to feel like a documentary of that moment,” Ouri says. “We naturally went for an epic longing, his beautiful folk touch and my explosive production met in the middle.”

THE GARDEN – “FILTHY RABBIT HOLE”
California band The Garden return with their first single in two years and a video that looks straight out of 1986.

MICHELLE – “OONTZ”
NY collective MICHELLE announced a new album, Songs About You Specifically, due out on September 27 via Atlantic Records/Transgressive. They’ve also shared a new single, funky alt-pop track “Oontz.”

LUCY (COOPER B. HANDY) & SURF GANG – “SAME THING”
LUCY (Cooper B. Handy), who’s opening the upcoming Chanel Beads tour, has announced a collaborative EP with Surf Gang, JACK & THE BEANSTALK, due next week (June 28). The first single is the cloud rap-leaning “Same Thing,” produced by Surf Gnag leader Evilgiane and Dutch newcomer CCured.

After much teasing, Thurston Moore has finally, officially announced his new solo album, Flow Critical Lucidity, and he released this new single. Read about it here.

STEVE WYNN – “MAKE IT RIGHT”
The Dream Syndicate‘s Steve Wynn will release a memoir, I Wouldn’t Say It If It Wasn’t True, and new solo album, Make it Right, on August 30. Here’s the album’s title track.

CHIME SCHOOL – “GIVE YOUR HEART AWAY”
Fans of jangly guitar pop a la The Stone Roses or The La’s, listen up, it’s the first single from SF band Chime School’s second album.

Hunder Waters vocalist Nicole Miglis announced her debut solo album, Myopia, and gave us a second early taste with “Autograph,” which you can read more about here.

TRENTEMØLLER – “DREAMWEAVERS”
Danish electronic musician Trentemøller will release his new album Dreamweaver on September 13 via his own In My Room label. The album expands his dark, hazy, danceable style and features vocals from Icelandic singer Disa.

SARAH KINSLEY – “LAST TIME WE NEVER MEET AGAIN”
Sarah Kinsley announced her debut full-length album and shared the first single, which you can read more about here.

KING KRULE – “TIME FOR SLURP”
King Krule is back with a surprise-released EP, SHHHHHHH!, which features four short songs that were previously only available via flexi-discs sold during his 2023 SHHHHHH! Tour of intimate venues right before the announcement of last year’s Space Heavy. They’ve made a video for the EP’s most rockin’ song.
