So many artists, so many songs, so little time. Each week we review a handful of new albums (of all genres), round up even more new music that we’d call “indie,” and talk about what metal is coming out. We post music news, track premieres, and more all day. We update a playlist weekly of some of our current favorite tracks. Here’s a daily roundup with a bunch of interesting, newly released songs in one place.

Irish post-rock vets God Is An Astronaut have shared the title track from their upcoming 11th album Embers.

SOPHIE – “ONE MORE TIME” FT. POPSTAR
We just heard “Berlin Nightmare” from SOPHIE’s anticipated posthumous album, and here’s another minimal, club-ready new track, “One More Time,” featuring Popstar.

PEEL DREAM MAGAZINE – “WISH YOU WELL”
“‘Wish You Well’ is a song about the animality that we are all hardwird with, and how it can bring out the worst in us,” says Peel Dream Magazine’s Joe Stevens of the band’s new single. “Instinct drives some people to be ruthlessly competitive, Rose Main Reading Room deals a lot with this juncture of the civilized and natural world. I wrote this song as a statement, like, freeing myself from the influence of people who’ve pushed me around at different points in my life. In the music video, Olivia and I are portraying people who secretly try to undermine others. Everyone’s behavior is juxtaposed with these brutally violent scenes from nature, as well as all of this DNA and celluar imagery to establish this idea that its completely elemental. We shot this video with an awesome filmmaker who goes by Otium, and got to play around with all these different performance setups in front of a cyclorama wall in downtown LA.”

UNIFORM – “PERMANENT EMBRACE”
Uniform’s fifth album American Standard is out August 23 and the band have shared a second single. “Permanent Embrace” is very ’90s industrial by way of grandiose noise rock. Michael Berdan says, “The music reflects the psychic violence of the lyrics, as riffs and rhythms that wouldn’t feel out of place in the Unsane catalog careen into giant synth melodies before collapsing into itself. This is kind of our misguided interpretation of what Faith No More were doing on ‘Angel Dust’, and we hope that our tip of the hat to those masters of madness can hold a candle to their horrific splendor.”

WHY BONNIE – “RHYME OR REASON”
Why Bonnie’s new album Wish on the Bone is out next month, and they’ve shared another new single from it, “Rhyme or Reason.” Blair Howerton says the song is “inspired by my own experience with grief. It’s about the impermanence of life and how it’s terrifying but also really beautiful.”

GIFT – “LIGHT RUNNER”
NYC dreampop band GIFT have shared another song off their upcoming album Illuminator — “Light Running” is a jubilant, anthemic slice of electro-rock. “The album and song ‘Ray of Light’ by Madonna was a massive inspiration while recording Illuminator – I wanted to pay homage to the brilliant music video directed by one of my favorite directors Jonas Åkerlund,” the band’s TJ Freda says of the song and video. “‘Light Runner’ celebrates the triumph of emerging from a dark time while acknowledging the transformative power of overcoming it. It’s a testament to the euphoria of personal achievement.In 2023, during our first European tour, we were enthralled by the origins of 90s UK bands like Primal Scream, Massive Attack, and Oasis. Following a show in Glasgow, the promoters treated us to an underground Jungle/DnB rave, blowing our minds wide open.”

SUNFLOWER BEAN – “SHAKE”
NYC band Sunflower Bean have announced the SHAKE EP which is their first record they’ve produced themselves. “SHAKE was inspired by our first years as a DIY band, the spirit that birthed us and gave us the chance to have this enduring journey together,” Sunflower Bean says of the EP. “We wrote, recorded, engineered, and produced these songs so nothing was filtered through anyone else’s idea of us. We always felt like rock and roll was a feeling, not a sound. But sometimes there is no subverting it or explaining it. We’re now offering it exactly as it occurred to us.” The title track is grungy, bluesy and kinda dancey.

BLITZ VEGA – “LOST MYSELF” FT ANDY ROURKE
Blitz Vega, the duo of Kav Sandhu and the late Andy Rourke, release their debut album on September 27. “‘Lost Myself’ was both of our favourite songs on the album,” says Kav. “It was inspired by our journeys of losing people and the moments of dealing with grief, trying to find the balance to be able to get on with life. Although we wrote the song in the summer of 2019, I rewrote the lyrics early in 2023 when I was travelling back from NYC to LA finishing the album whilst seeing Andy in hospital dealing with his illness. The song reflected my own personal experience of coping with the situation. It is about finding yourself in the lowest possible place and climbing up to the light. The guitar solo at the end is like the breath of fresh air you experience after being able to find that moment of peace.”

SARAH NEUFELD / RICHARD REED PARRY / REBECCA FOON – “MARIA”
Cellist Rebecca Foon, violin player Sarah Neufeld, and multi-instrumentalist Richard Reed Parry are releasing a new album as a trio, First Sounds, due out on November 1 via Envision Records. It was produced by Shahzad Iismaily, who plays percussion on the first single, “Maria.” “The melody was inspired by an old handmade recording on reel-to-reel tape that came with a tape recorder I bought, it had very slowed down /half-speed voices singing hymns on it, but the recording was so slow and distorted you couldn’t really tell what they were singing,” Parry says. “So the tune sort of felt like a hymn-like invocation.”

EMPRESS OF – “LIKE SOMEONE I KNOW” (MARGO GURYAN COVER)
Clairo, Margo Price, Empress Of, TOPS, Frankie Cosmos, Bedouine, Barrie and more have contributed to new tribute compilation Like Someone I Know: A Celebration of Margo Guryan, which will be out November 8 via Sub Pop. Empress Of provides the title track. More on the album here.

GENEVA JACUZZI – “SCENE BALLERINA”
Geneva Jacuzzi releases her new album Triple Fire next month, and she’s just shared the video for new single “Scene Ballerina” where she plays an attention-hungry party attendee. Says Geneva: “We all know that person: The Scene Ballerina. Stirring up a whirlpool of drama. Leaping to the center of the spotlight, spinning lies, twisting stories. All for attention. A tragic character. I can name a few ;)”

TESS PARKS – “KOALAS”
“It’s the most beautiful music I’ve ever heard,” Tess Parks says of the backing for “Koalas” which was created by her partner Ruari Meehan and features the whistling of Molly Lewis. It’s the first single from her upcoming album Pomegranate.

FIGHT DICE (THE PROMISE RING, BRAID, etc) – “MAGIC PACT”
Fight Dice is a new Dungeons & Dragons-inspired band made up of some ’90s emo veterans, including vocalist Jay Gilkay (Evel), bassist Todd Bell (Braid, Hey Mercedes), drummer Dan Didier (The Promise Ring, Maritime), and guitarists Brett Schwandt (Evel, Ceilishrine) and Eric Arsnow (Tigernite, Devils Teeth), and their debut album Total Party Kill comes out on September 20.
