So many artists, so many songs, so little time. Each week we review a handful of new albums (of all genres), round up even more new music that we’d call “indie,” and talk about what metal is coming out. We post music news, track premieres, and more all day. We update a playlist weekly of some of our current favorite tracks. Here’s a daily roundup with a bunch of interesting, newly released songs in one place.
THIRDFACE – “MIDIAN”
Nashville’s Thirdface are not your average hardcore band, and they’re also extremely good at making the hard-to-pin-down music that they make. Today, they followed recent single “Meander” with another ferocious taste of their upcoming sophomore LP Ministerial Cafeteria.

FLYING LOTUS – “INGO SWANN”
Flying Lotus goes in a funk-infused house direction his second single of 2024, “Ingo Swann.”

LISEL – “RINGS”
Lisel’s new album The Vanishing Point is out next week, and she’s given us another early taste with “Rings.” “RINGS continues the dystopian folklore of the album, looking to create a mythology to understand the deteriorating future — in RINGS we grow tired of trying to comprehend and look instead for meaning in starlight, spirit animals, tarot cards, the moon, tea leaves, promised tunes,” she says.

MAMMOTH GRINDER – “CORPSE OF DIVINANT”
Power Trip drummer Chris Ulsh is gearing up to release the first Mammoth Grinder record in 6 years this November, and today he shared this new D-beating death metal rager from it.

MAGGIE ROGERS – “IN THE LIVING ROOM”
Ahead of her fall tour, Maggie Rogers has shared a new single, “In the Living Room,” which she says she wrote “in March 2023, a few months after writing Don’t Forget Me. My co-writer/co-producer, Ian Fitchuk, and I were back in the studio and decided to try for one more song. Like so much of the album, it’s a song about the beauty and pain of memory, and the way that interweaves with reality when you’re processing the exit of a person in your life. Ultimately, Don’t Forget Me as an album is about how we remember people, and the stories we tell ourselves in the process of creating new realities.”

YOO DOO RIGHT – “EAGER GLACIER”
Montreal’s You Doo Right release new album From the Heights of Our Pastureland on November 8 and here’s a proggy, heavy epic-length cut from it.

2ND GRADE – “I WANNA BE ON YOUR MIND,” “LIKE A WILD THING,” “UNCONTROLLABLY COOL”
Philly power poppers 2nd Grade’s new album Scheduled Explosions is out later this month, and they’ve shared three more tracks from it, “I Wanna Be On Your Mind,” “Uncontrollably Cool,” and “Like a Wild Thing.” Peter Gill says “I Wanna Be On Your Mind” is “one of the first pop songs I ever wrote, so it’s like a little time capsule tucked away at the end of the album. It’s written from the perspective of a song that wants to be stuck in a listener’s head. I love Catherine Dwyer’s vocal performance on it. Really I just want to write songs for other people to sing.”

TUCKER ZIMMERMAN & ADRIANNE LENKER – “LORELEI”
Folk cult hero Tucker Zimmerman releases Dance of Love this week which was produced by Big Theif who also serve as his backing band. Here’s one more taste before the whole thing is out — “Lorelei” has him and Adrianne Lenker trading lines. “I’m turning Lorelei on her head in this song,” Tucker says. “Enough luring sailors on the river to their destruction. Time to head for the hills with a silver harp and bring some peace into the world.”

YOUTH LAGOON – “MY BEAUTIFUL GIRL”
Youth Lagoon’s third new single of 2024 (following “Football” and “Lucy Takes a Picture”) is the evocative “My Beautiful Girl,” a space piano track. “There’s a near-ghost town in western Idaho called Idaho City — about 30 minutes from home,” Trevor Powers says. “I go there often to swim in the river, pray, and be alone in the country. Last time I went, I hiked through the cemetery (known as ‘Boothill’ ‘cuz of all the miners that died with their boots on) and saw a gravestone in darkness and dry weeds that said only, ‘My Beautiful Girl.’ No name. No dates. Just love. Who was this beautiful girl? The portal opened, and I wrote down the message.”

BICEP & HAMMER RELEASE “CHROMA 007 STEALL”
Belfast dance duo Bicep are back with this new banger that’s a collaboration with neighbors Hammer.

BRYCE DESSNER – “CLOSING”
The National‘s Bryce Dessner has scored the upcoming A24 romantic drama We Live in Time that stars Florence Pugh and Andrew Garfield, and will be out in limited release this Friday (10/11). The score will be out a week later, October 17 via A24 Music, and you can listen to “Closing” from it below.

THE COWARD BROTHERS (ELVIS COSTELLO & T-BONE BURNETT) – “ALWAYS”
Longtime Collaborators Elvis Costello and T-Bone Burnett have revived their The Coward Brothers alias for a new “wireless drama” scripted podcast and an accompanying album.

CARDINALS – “GET IT”
Hailing from Cork, Ireland, five-piece Cardinals mix post-punky rock with traditional celtic music and lots of attitude. The band released their debut EP earlier this year, have been namechecked by Fontaines D.C.’s Grian Chatten and Kneecap, and their fall tour schedule incudes Pitchfork Paris and UK dates with Been Stellar. Here’s their new single.

DANIEL JOHNSTON – “ALL GOOD CHILDREN GOT TO DIE”
Daniel Johnston‘s 1991 outsider art classic, Artistic Vice, is getting a double-LP Collector’s Edition, which comes with 16 outtakes, rehearsals, and previously unreleased songs, like “All Good CHildren Got to Die.”

LESS THAN JAKE – “SUNNY SIDE”
Ska-punk veterans Less Than Jake have been rolling out singles over the past few months, and today they announced that all four recent singles, the just-released “Sunny Side,” and two others will make up their new EP, Uncharted, due 11/15 via Pure Noise. JEFF PARKER & ETA IVTET – “LATE AUTUMN”
Acclaimed jazz guitarist/bandleader and Tortoise member Jeff Parker has announced a new album by his ETA IVtet, and the 17-minute lead single “Late Autumn” comes with a film directed by Mikel Patrick Avery. Read more here.
