The 2024 Tony Awards were given out Sunday night in NYC, and this year’s crop of nominees was surprisingly friendly to the indie/alternative music world. Stereophonic, the play about a 70s rock band trying to make it that features songs by Will Butler (ex-Arcade Fire) was nominated for 13 and won five, making it this year’ most decorated production: Best Play, Best Direction of a Play, Best Featured Performer for Will Brill, Best Scenic Design of a Play, and Best Sound Design of a Play.
Illinoise, the musical based on Sufjan Stevens’ album of the same name, was nominated for four Tonys and won one for Best Choreography. Illinoise lost Best Musical to The Outsiders, a musical adaptation of S.E. Hinton’s classic coming-of-age novel.
Sadly, Here Lies Love — the Imelda Marcos musical by David Byrne and Fatboy Slim — didn’t win any of the four categories it was nominated in.
