So many artists, so many songs, so little time. Each week we review a handful of new albums (of all genres), round up even more new music that we’d call “indie,” and talk about what metal is coming out. We post music news, track premieres, and more all day. We update a playlist weekly of some of our current favorite tracks. Here’s a daily roundup with a bunch of interesting, newly released songs in one place.
YANN TIERSEN – “RATHLIN FROM A DISTANCE” & “NINNOG AT SEA”
Producer and composer Yann Tiersen has announced new album Rathlin from a Distance | The Liquid Hour, which will be out April 4 via Mute. as the title suggests, the album is split into two distinct parts: Rathlin from a Distance is instrumental piano pieces, while The Liquid Hour is a “genre-defying blend of electronic and psychedelic rhythms.” Hear a song from both sides of the album:

THE HORRORS – “LOTUS EATER”
The Horrors’ first album in eight years, Night Life, arrives in March, and they’ve shared another single from it, “Lotus Eater.” “‘Lotus Eater’ has had several past lives,” they say. “It was one of the first songs from the Night Life sessions that we felt really excited about – Rhys’ original lyric had a feeling that made me think of ‘5 Years’ by David Bowie, and I started to build on the idea. A lotus eater lives in a state of blissful ignorance, and the song to me describes the moment of coming back to reality. We wanted it to have a feeling of both melancholy and euphoria, letting go of the past and starting again. The spoken word section was improvised in the studio, and the mid-section of chopped-up electronics came from Amelia’s world of synth programming. It feels almost like a sister track to Sea Within a Sea in some ways, and it’s one of our favourite songs on the new album.”

MARY IN THE JUNKYARD – “BEAR WALK”
“‘bear walk’ is the story of someone trying to make their lover stay with them in their feral lifestyle,” London band mary in the junkyard say of their delicate new single. “It is about the push and pull between wildness and conventionality, and was born from us playing some acoustic gigs over the summer.”

HILDEGARD – “NO OTHER MIND”
Following their recent album Jour 1596, Helena Deland and Ouri have shared another single as Hildegard, the mellow, soulful “No Other MInd.”

DUTCH INTERIOR – “SANDCASTLE MOLDS”
LA band Dutch Interior say “Sandcastle Molds” was their attempt at making “a fucked up Fleetwood Mac song.” Adds frontman Jack Nugent, “This song grew from the realization, while driving down the 405 after a long night, that I might be losing my edge. ‘Sandcastle Molds’ deals with holding on to your sense of self as the world descends into madness at a nauseating pace. How does one hold on to hope when the state of all things seems to be in rapid decay?”

KASSIE KRUT – “BLOOD”
NYC trio Kassie Krut have shared one more single ahead of the release of their debut self-titled EP this Friday, the distorted electro track “Blood”

SWANSEA SOUND – “(I WANNA WEAR A) MIRRORED HAT LIKE SLADE”
Swansea Sound, the UK indie supergroup led by Heavenly‘s Amelia Fletcher and Pooh Sticks‘ Hue Williams (and also featuring with Heavenly’s Rob Pursey, The Dentists‘ Bob Collins, and Death in Vegas‘ Ian Button), have thrown their hat in the holiday song ring with this appropriately glammy riff-rocker.

DENISON WITMER – “FOCUS RING” FT. SUFJAN STEVENS
Denison Witmer announced a new album, Anything At All, due out on February 14 via Asthmatic Kitty. It was recorded and produced by Sufjan Stevens, who features on the new single, orchestrated folk track “Focus Ring.”

MAIA FRIEDMAN – “ON PASSING”
Maia Friedman (Dirty Projectors, Towbow, etc) is back with her first new solo music since 2022, the lush, orchestral “On Passing.” She says she wrote the song “as the health of two close friends were in rapid decline, with illnesses that led to both of their untimely deaths,” adding, “Processing end-of-life is at once entirely natural and human, and at the same time, entirely abstract and unimaginable. It feels impossible to fathom, thus we vacillate through emotions; despair, anger, disbelief, confusion, and often eventually settle into a permanent melancholy (the quiet sadness) that will forever be tied to the memory of those we’ve lost. I find it healing to celebrate these memories in ephemeral moments of magic; a leaf falling from a tree, the glint and reflection of sun on water, a particular scent in the air, a bird that visits our windowsill unexpectedly.”

WREN – “METRIC OF GRIEF”
UK sludge band Wren have announced a new album, Black Rain Falls, due February 21 via Church Road. Here’s the dark, heavy lead single.

GHAIS GUEVARA – “4L”
Philly rapper Ghais Guevara has shared “4L,” the third single off his upcoming Fat Possum debut Goyard Ibn Said, and this one finds him going in more of woozy, melodic direction than the first two. He also announced a Brooklyn show. Read more here.
